I am starting my layout by building some rolling stock kits. This is a Tichy 40' flat being modified to a TOFC chain down (there is some distortion from the camera but I did notice some camber crept into the deck after a while). I made the ramps and rails from styrene. I want to get the details from Walters that have bottle jacks and deck mounted chain ratchets. I am going to scratch build some short trailers with some A line wheels and landing gear.

I also made two E&B cement cars for my redi mix plant ( with a couple of primer scratches, time for the repair track already)

I have really enjoyed assembling them and found surmounting the challenges of so many tiny parts a great way to appreciate the hobby. I also made me wonder about climbing the ladders to the roofs. These days you would need 3' railings above the top step. It must have been fun to go back down from the roof!
I have colors figured out and have started playing with weathering (on the flatcar deck and wheels so far). I spent a year reading all of your posts and researching prototypes. While I wait to have the time and funds to start my room and layout I am continuing to fill in spots in the roster.
My TOFC yard will interchange all '50's style systems. I was able to get a copy of a New Haven publication that has 6 pages of detailed pictures of clejan cars. I am planing on scratch-building a few of them so this first effort has been very educational.
I will also kit-bash some 50+ foot Tichy flats with hitches, and scratch a flexi-van or two.
I weighted the hoppers with 10 1/4 x 1" hex bolts to get to 3.5 oz and it really makes a difference on the feel.

Thanks to all the great information on trains and modeling methods. I'm hooked (or coupled?)
