I'm just starting in O Gauge, I have two Lionel FT's I'd like to lash back to back. What's the trick getting the front one to go forward and the second in reverse ??

Standard e-units, TMCC, Legacy, or what? Standard e-unit conventional, using the lever provided, cycle until moving the direction you want, then move the lever to the disable e-unit position.
That FT.JPG 's how mine work. BTW, FT's as delivered had no batteries in I think the A unit, and were tethered to the B unit with a drawbar except for Santa Fe, who knew better (still no batteries in A unit) and fought the unions for a long time on pay over that little careless act.

Thanks, it is a conventional unit. It has the run and lock switch underneath, I'll try again but seems to have a problem ?? it's still changing dirrections ??

Al that switch does is kill power or apply power to the reversing unit solenoid. Here's a quick test and set:

One engine on the track. Turn the power up just until the engine starts to creep. With power still on, operate the switch to the opposite direction it started from. Did the loco change output to the wheels? Like, dropped into neutral or started in some direction?
If not, move the switch back to where it started. It has to cycle at some point, and when it does go "click" and power changes (forward-neutral-reverse-etc) THAT is the direction of the switch applying power to the reverse unit solenoid.
Remember that position. Continue cycling until that particular unit is going in the direction you want it to....and move the switch to the non-live position, and it won't cycle.
