Greetings from the new moderator of the New York Central Forum. Thanks, guys for allowing me to moderate here.
The New York Central was a great road. Surely there are many of you out there with at least a passing interest, or perhaps are modelling parts of the NYC. I would like to see at least one old photograph a day show up here. Come on, Ron, post one of yours.
Here is a partial wish list: Photos of J-1e Hudsons 5315 and 5330.
Today's quiz: Has anyone received the latest Schrader's RR catalog with the photo of J-1e Hudson 5271 tapestry on the cover? What's wrong with that picture? Winner gets a jpg copy of the picture.

  2. Well, I'm not Ron, but will this do?

    NYC 5938 GP9
It was 1960 and the glory days of New York Central passenger service was behind it when this photo of NYC 5938 was taken on November 12th at the Big Four station in Anderson Indiana. - Bob Bruns Collection.

Roger, thanks for the post and the picture, and your prior prods to get this forum going. Evidently you have the NYC diesel photo collection. Since I don't know an SD-9 from Dash8-44CW, maybe you can help me with the identity of these old machines. I do know some of the early Alco's, like RS-3's for example. Now, ask me about J-1e vs. J-3a, or L-4 or S-1, and I can contribute.
    Steamin' on.

  4. Nope. No diesel collection. I do have some shots taken in and around Madison County Indiana. My diesel fact information primarily comes from "New York Central System Diesel Locomotives" by Edson, Vail and Smith.

Roger, keep 'em coming. I want to provide a hint to the quiz question of a couple of days ago. Here is a rather poor scan of the Schrader's catalog cover. What's wrong with this picture?

I am interested in any information source and photos of the Big Four from Bellefountaine Ohio to Indianapolis. I am particularly intersted in the area between Muncie and Anderson Indiana in the 1950s. I have tried to get info from the NYCSHS and from a variety of other boards, but have not had much success. Thanks for any help you can give.

Noel, welcome to Trainboard! See, I told you you would get results here. Everyone is very helpful. My own NYC experience is on the mainline in upstate NY, so can't offer much on the Big Four. There are quite a few members here whom I'm sure can help.

Noel, I almost forgot. Are you familiar with George Elwood's fantastic site that has photos and other info on almost every fallen flag in the country. Go look at his list of subjects at url http://www.dnaco.net/~gelwood/other/
and scroll down the list. There are seven "big4" subjects, most are timetables if that would be of any help.

  9. Back to the original question. The only thing that I have noticed is that the number isn't the same as you quoted in your message.

If there is anything else, I can't spot it. :-(

Roger, "Hudsonut1" (Ron Morse) correctly identified the problem, but did so offline as he is having problems getting our system to accept his password. The number (5271) is correct, it's just a poor scan. The problem is that 5271 is (was) a J-1e, and as such would have had a rectangular number plate below the headlight. Of the Hudsons, only J-3's had the NYC oval. So did later L-4 Mohawks and S class Niagaras.

  11. Duhh! I would not have caught that simply because most of the photos I have are side view or the front is in shadow. You couldn't tell whether there was an NYC oval or not.

    Got me! :)
