What is the best refernce to use to find lineside intdustries between Stockton and Portola? Preferably 1970-80s.
I am not sure about a BEST reference. Going town-by-town on Sanborn's insurance maps might help. A WP shipper's reference would also be good. I have a 1973 Southern Pacific tariff listing industries, commodities and what railroad served, for "common points" on the SP where there was another railroad... in other words, all towns where SP ran but where there was also another railroad. According to my 1973 [/i]Rand McNally Handy Railroad Atlas of the United States[/i], that would include Stockton, Sacramento, Marysville and possibly Oroville. (Tiny map data, hard to read) That 1973 tariff (time period you specified) is in my designated train room and train library where I have an apartment-challenged day-sleeper stepson camping out for 8 months. When he goes to work and I am allowed to enter the room, I will hunt up what I can find....

Koppers was a big distributor of creosote for treating wood, and had their own treating plants. Some 20 years ago, I saw a textbook on wood preservation at the public library (since then apparently discarded from the library collection for lack of interest...) Many of the photos of preservation plants were "courtesy Koppers". I used that textbook and a visit to an East Texas to build my own fictitious "Creotex" company.
