Atlas U23-B in Penn Central. It will be weathered into a filthy rusty work horse and put to work on my early Conrail layout.

It's unique with the reverse color herald on the nose, apparently an experiment that Grande tried and didn't stick with. I have to say one thing I do like about Athearn is they have been offering specific details matching SD45's. Almost all of the first order D&RGW SD45's had low mount brake cylinders, which were prone to damage in derailments. Numbers 5317 and 5319 had them but the last number 5324 had high mount cylinders, and the models match that. IIRC, all of the second order had high mount so the second and third runs, being from the second EMD order all have high mount cylinders. But since Athearn has put out large herald at a 2/1 ratio, they owe us another run of small herald. From memory the small and large were split 50/50:

    Small herald Rio Grande SD45's:

    5316, 5317, 5318, 5319, 5320, 5321, 5323, 5324, 5325, 5330, 5332, 5335, 5339

    Large herald Rio Grande SD45's:

    5315, 5322, 5326, 5327, 5328, 5329, 5331, 5333, 5334, 5336, 5337, 5338, 5340

5326, 5327, 5328, 5336, 5337, 5338 were outfitted with UP signal system for pool service on the joint UP/D&RGW Kaiser "Coal Liner" trains. Although exceptions did occur, normally you would see D&RGW SD45's from the above 6 road numbers pooled with UP SD45's (originally 3643-3649 and eventually expanded to 3638-3649 series, renumber in 1978 to 38-49 along with the others to reuse the four digit numbers on new SD40-2's.

There are a few interesting power sets on the Kaiser trains. In my books I have found one of the trains with an SD40T-2 leading, and in another a D&RGW SD45 and UP SD45 sandwich a UP SD24B!!! But 95% of the photo's show only pool number SD45's that I can find. I did buy the some of the Athearn UP SD45's to pool, namely #3648 (the only Kaiser 4 digit number Athearn has offered, and #40 and 48 from the UP 1978 re-numbers. I'd like to see Athearn offer #3649 from the 4 digit UP as it seemed to be the most common number, as well as #49, both in photographs in my books.

Last year I managed to pick up a 10 new numbers form the Athearn 2nd run of UP Thrall gons - so now can run a Kaiser coal train 40 cars long and have a Centralia Shops UP caboose to bring up the rear.

Here's my latest. I took an undecorated RSD 4/5 and switched frames with an RS 11 to make an RS 3. Painted it up and labeled it for the Uintah. Not bad for a first timer no?[IMG][IMG]

Are you going to be hauling bagged gilsonite on flat cars on your Uintah Ry in NE Utah? The narrow gauge line ran their 2-6-6-2s on 7.5% grades & thru 85 degree curves!

Naw this is standard guage. Right now the only industry on the Uintah line is a saw mill. Future expansion will dictate what else I can put on. My main layout starts in South eastern Utah and goes into southwestern Colorado. That is where this line ties in.

Now the Gilsonite bags would make an interesting feature. I can add a team track in the small town planned for the expansion line where flat cars and box cars can be loaded

Did you strip Utah RSD4/5 shells? Those things are hard as hens teeth to find. I've got numbers from the first Atlas run but still want to find numbers from the 2nd run of Utah - long sold out.

Nope. I bought two undecorated RSD 4/5's. I also bought an RS11 and stripped that to paint up in Utah colors. I have three Utah RSD 4/5's. 301,302,305. Actually after I looked closer at the 301 that I bought off eBay I noticed it was missing 2 axles. It is actually an RS3 even though the box says RSD 4/5.

Well, I finally got some weathering done on these D&RGW SD9's, to reflect the twilight of their long career's, These will be used as if they were shoving long trains over the hump in Grand Junction, they were almost perfect for the job. I sure enjoyed listening to them and their steady chant while going about their chores, if only for a few years I am sure glad I got to see a couple of them in service. They will provide the same service on my MRR, hopefully for many years :)
Still trying to figure out how to make the amber beacons on top the cabs, got a couple ideas, but man they were perched up with what looks like a couple wires LOL.

    Thanks Paul,
    I appreciate your comments.
Sounds like you have quite a trip planned. What kind of model are you thinking of getting to detail and paint?

Well, it was supposed to come out Blue and red...... Back to the paint booth. I think I can get it masked and redo the top. The blue should match the painters tape on the mirror. On the bright side, I now have 2 good prime coats on the top!

I used an acrylic, I will look at the bottles tonight. I mixed it with 91% alc. it sprayed and dried very well. I'm not dreading the painting, just the masking!

    Thanks guys!
