I've run LHA many times on the road and on switchers. It's not too bad in the yard except you can't see the switches sometimes but on the road it's a pain. If the engine is set up for it, that helps but you're still blind on the left. Even running the old LHA units short-hood lead stinks because all the controls are backward and on the wrong side. Scrap 'em!
Well they are the older EMD's, usually SD40-2's and GP38's. But in Waterville, Ohio on the JM spur i've seen a Canadian National C44-9 run LHF.
I was flipping through an old Trains magazine from the 70s and there is a pic of a UP train in Nevada with a DD35 running LHF! Apparently the lead DD35 had a mechanical failure and they cut it out somewhere. Now that is one hell of a long hood to look down!
