Very nice job John!! Your work has a true realism. Wherez that tug you chopped up--? anxious to see how you bash it. Also would like to know more about your barges..
A note here-- for all you waterfront guys. Stony Smith ( over at ZCS) has made some Z scale bitts. The bitts can be used on docks, seawalls, barges, I'm using them on American Legend, or as single bollards. They are made by Shapeways and are a nice detail for nautical scenes.

John, I like the idea of layering and dropping stuff in so it "floats". Good idea on the oil leak and slick too. The scuzz up the sides adds a real nice waterline. And the sewer.

    Thanks guys for the compliments.

Ah Fred - I knew I would tweak your interest. The LIRR tug was on hold until I got the water poured. It is falling back in line behind the barges cause I have to get the barges to market (or to port whichever makes you smile). The cargo barge (pictured here) is with Russ Kaufman now getting casted and should be hitting the market soon. The next is a flat top work barge (based on the same hull shown here) followed by a covered bump-end barge. I am also sending Russ the refrig, stove, water heater and bathtub I built for those to be casted and sent to the market. Stony Smith has some great stuff and I will have to check out his Z scale bitts.

A prominent landmark building on Dutch Kills in the 1960s was the DB (Draw Bridge) cabin http://www.trainsarefun.com/lirr/bliss/dbcabin8-10-63richmakse.jpg I really wanted this on my layout. Mountaineer Precision Products used to make a near perfect match (#MPP-201Z B&O Station kit http://www.zscalemonster.com/mpp/rr-structure/mpp-201z.jpg) but alas it is no longer in production so I had to kitbash my DB cabin from two Stonebridge Models #SBM-1011 site office kits http://www.zscalemonster.com/stonebridge/laser-structures/sbd-1011.jpg RS Laser black #RSL-4910 3 Tab Roofing kit http://www.zscalemonster.com/rslaserkits/rsl-z4910.jpg and the smoke stack from a Grandt Line HO scale passenger car roof detail smoke stack kit #5043. The electrical box is from BLMA #8104 http://www.zscalemonster.com/blma/8104/blma8104.htm Next comes the ballast, bushes, small trees, weeds and of course junk to round out the scene.

I like the process you are following. Everytime I see this it looks better and better. The water look is very convincing! Can't wait to see the rusted up boats!

Wow it’s been over a month since I posted any progress on my layout and although it may have seemed like I was not doing anything I was quite busy. I finished my oil tank depot center. It took me a while because I had to bash the Kibri fuel tank kit a bit, add a Artitec weigh shed as the depot’s office and add a Micron Art fence all around. Then I began to add some scenery with some old railroad ties, a marsh area and a trial stink tree (more scenery to follow in this area) and laid down some more ballast. I also was busy finishing one of my newly release NSM cargo barges (just announced in the issue January / February 2011 of Ztrack Magazine) as a scrap metal barge (on the left side of first photo) and finishing up the master for my soon to be released NSM flat cargo barge (on the right side of first photo). The oil tank depot secures the right side of the port and now I will work on the scrap metal yard to secure the left side. After that I have more buildings for the right side of the port ready to go. Plus I am working on two more types of barges to be released by NSM in the next few months.

    Enjoy!

    John

Really great trash barge! Good you find time to have some progress, can't say this about your next loco, but I'm trying hard...

John - Definately not drinking water!

Jim – Lots of trash in NYC. That load is actual little metal pieces all rusted in one fashion or another.

Gerd – My friend, all in good time, you’re an artist so I have complete confidence in you! It will be a great one of a kind loco!

Jürgen – If you mean the crane I bought it from Savonart on eBay Z Scale Crawler Crane on eBay!
