The severed leg of a 69-year-old man killed with his wife when their van was struck by a freight train in Mississippi was found 700 miles (1,100 km) away near Chicago, authorities said on Wednesday.

Max Twiner and his wife Virginia, 68, died on Monday when their van was crushed by a Canadian National Railroad train at a rail crossing near Yazoo City, Mississippi.

Max's leg -- with the boot still on -- was discovered caught up in one of the train cars upon its arrival in Harvey, Ill., on Tuesday.

"It is a catastrophic collision when a train hits a vehicle," railroad spokesman Ian Thomson said, explaining the dismemberment.

The accident is under investigation, authorities said.

Not only did the crew have to live with killing this couple, but now the trainman who was working on that string of cars in Markam Yard (ICs Chicago Yard in Illinois) is probably going to be cautious now on as he goes through cars. I am amazed at how long the limb stayed with the train. My condolances go out to the family of the couple..as well as the crew and trainmen having to find all the eveidence. :(

I think that I should have posted this with Watash's column "She is NOT Going To Make It". I think that stories like these could actually scare people away from the tracks.

I dunno mate. check out the photo in the 'railfan nightmare' thread in the photography forum. the post is about rude people getting in the way of photographers, but in the picure check out the 'railfan' showing his kid (looks to be about 3 year old hight) how to get REALLY close to the trains...

I don't know, I saw that, maybe the father was just showing him how to be careful around trains. Granted it was not the best place to show him.....a live locomotive. I just remember my uncle showing me how big these trains were in Chicago Union Station.....I got the hint...and never got really close when unnessissary.....I remember a few times when I was railfanning at my local station and even when the train was about 1/2 mile away and slowing for the stop..there were a few kids about 5-8 years of age who warned me to be careful. Their parents told them that I probably know what I was doing, but it showed me, that there were parents out there who taught their kids how to be safe around trains and railroad equipment. I was very happy to see that....So in the case of t he p[icture, I am at mixed emtions on that, I just hope it was a father showing his son how to properly handle being around trains safely. [IMG] I hope

    Rob,
I did see that pic and though I do not know the circumstances, it is not the best place to be standing, especially if the crew decided to dump some steam and did not see them!

BTW- I have seen them dump steam at Strasburg plenty of times and might I say, it is an awesome sight and sound!
