Living in the West near the U.P. main line over Donner summit, I noticed a lot of the mileposts start with an RV (meaning Roseville subdivision). In recent years U.P. has split Roseville sub into Roseville and Nevada subs. Up north about 100 miles or so is the old W.P line (now U.P. owned). I hear the dispatchers refer to some of it as the Canyon Subdivision however on that line farther east the mileposts are designated with an "F" prefix (just like the RV prefix). Does anyone know what the "F" stands for? Was it (or is it still) the name of a different subdivision? I've tried to research this but to no avail.

Purely guessing, does Feather River have something to do with it?

I've thought that too but I've never heard anyone ever mention Feather river sub. I monitor radio traffic a lot and have heard them mention something like "signal indication at cpf385.2" but there's no mention of the subdivision. Dispatchers, Engineers and Conductors regularly mention milepost & subdivision when getting/giving warrants, clearances etc but not on that line. I have heard them mention Canyon subdivision but (not being quite as familiar with that route) I believe this is west of either Keddie Wye or Portola yard. Farther east......I don't know. It's all U.P. trackage with dispatchers in Council Bluff Iowa so you'd think they would all use the same dispatch protocol. I guess not. Also searching U.P.'s site they keep their subdivision & place name maps under wraps (hey that rhymes :). It appears you must be a paying customer to access most of their info (not sure why). Every time I try to access a map from their site it tells me I must create an account and login. Weird. Somebody knows the story (I just KNOW there's an interesting story here :). I'll find it someday :). Thanks
