I went by a small train show in Cameron on Saturday. I was up at the Armadillo Ranch mowing last week and Cameron is only 10 miles away. I picked up a few modeling supplies. They told me I had to go across the court house square and check out a model layout. Wow, I was blown away. Two old stores on the square had been repurposed. One was a museums covering Milam County history and the other was a huge HO layout that was connected to the museum through a passageway at the back. An exact replica of the Milam County court house. A model of the County Jail is on the left. All the buildings are copies of actual structures that existed in Cameron in the 1960s
A couple who grew up in Cameron created all the buildings while they were living in Austin. Every time they visited home they took photos and used them to build the models. After they retired they moved back home and built the layout of their hometown.
Cameron is in my neck of the woods and I had no idea this was there. I'll have to go check it out soon. If you're ever in Temple, they have a pretty nice HO layout right next to the Amtrak Station and BNSF Temple Yard in the old Moody depot. Super nice folks. You can go inside and watch them run trains on the layout or go sit on the big porch outside and watch trains run through at the south end of the BNSF yard where they service the engines. They also have O scale and N scale layouts. The fella at the O scale layout let my son run one of his trains. The folks back in the N scale part were kinda grumpy though.
Oh, yes. Been there multiple times. They host an open house for vendors and layout exhibitors on Saturday evenings during the Temple Train Shows. See the layout and then rush outside every time a train goes by.
That layout is mind-blowingly beautiful! It is amazing that such gems are often unnoticed, some almost next door. Thanks for sharing your photos of this wonderful place.
