    I'm really sick

I never saw it. I would have bid good for it. I have a Varney HO version of the same. Personal gift from Gordon Varney to my Dad back in the 40's. Would have made a beautiful set. :munhappy:

The prices on some of his Atlas cars are more than we pay here in Australian dollars! The Con-Cor GS4's sold here for $450-500, I don't think they sold too quickly.

I think we are witnessing WHY the hobby shop went out of business... ;)

I'd probably be scared away from model railroading if I had gone into that hobby shop. :D

This is what it comes with.

I recognize the track cause I was curious and bought one of these once just to see how bad it was. Its a pretty good little set if you pay less than $10 for it.

ok, so that's $10.00+$3.00 for astro turf,+$20.00 for a playmobile Indian set, + free rocks from the yard. It's possible the other $842 is in the labor. Well in that case, it's worth it!

I've been fighting the temptation to buy one of those Nscale battery-powered toys for a while now. It just seems like it would be tremendously wicked fun to set it on a layout at a show or something and watch the ensuing mayhem! :plaugh:

Wow, I had most of that set given to me quite a few years ago and I got about 25 bucks for them on Ebay. And I thought that was way more than what they were worth. But 200? Geez!

It amazes me how you guys find all the deals like that, I’ve been looking almost every day for stuff and I never find anything. I guess you just have to be at the right place at the right time.:tb-biggrin:

Ok boys, It was I who put the bid on the $100 docksider. My best offer was......... a buck. $1.00. a georgie.
    He turned it down.
Since I have around 30 of them whats one more.
I could tell you stories upon stories on the bay. Right now there is a SINGLE atlas B&O pass car listed for $100.
Ive also picked up a "lot" for $15 that had a small closed red box in the background.
Turned out it was a gold plated z scale limited edition marklin steam engine set.
I emailed the seller about it, and believe it or not he didnt want it back, told me just keep it. Go figure.I eneded up trading it.

I don’t think I’m going to read this thread anymore, it’s too depressing. :sidefrown:
Last month, I spent close to $500 on items averaging between $5 and $75, with most of it going toward shipping. I looked at the same items sold at the retail stores and realized I paid the same or more. The only difference was that I got a few items that were discontinued everywhere else.
All of the stuff that I really wanted was taken by one of the same two who seem to be in competition with each other. They always end up paying more then you can buy it retail and they seem to never run out of money. I can only assume they are either turning it around for resale or maybe it’s just a game.

I believe some people get addicted to bidding in the same way they do to gambling, or else they are dummy bidders bumping the price up.

Reserve eBay for old discontinued items... unless...

... you're buying many items from the same seller and are getting a reasonable break on the shipping cost. I usually figure what the cost of local and state taxes would cost me in lieu of shipping charges. If I buy an item for $100 and my sales taxes are 7%... then $7.00 for shipping is break even. If you buy an item for $5.00 and shipping is $5.00... it better be something you couldn't get anywhere near your home... or its not a good deal for you. Even when it comes to E-tailers... my standard rule of thumb is $100.00 or more per order to even out sales taxes versus shipping cost.

I have done the same as you've mentioned. I usually bid on items no longer or not currently in production. I realized that some stuff on eBay just didn't make sense bidding on because I could still find them stocked at a LHS within driving distance of my home. Unless you are finding 'steals' on eBay at 50% or more off list price... get it from your LHS if you have one nearby. Bear in mind that many folks bidding items may not have an LHS within reasonable distance from their home... thus they would be willing to pay for the shipping in lieu of paying state & local sales taxes.
