This is a big stupid question :

Is the MSRP the same as the List price or not?
Is the list price the price of a shop or the suggested price from the manufacturer ?

I've ordered many decoder at a shop and the only answer i have is "25% of list price"....
I'd like to calculate how much i'll be charge before i send them my credit card #...
    Help!

To clarify Fotheringill's answer a little more (and he is quite correct!) MSRP and list price mean the same thing. We just use two different terms to express the same concept.

Every item your LHS buys is based on the MSRP set by the manufacturer. The discount the LHS pays may vary by manufacturer, but every discount comes off the MSRP.

Your LHS, then, decides whether to sell each item at the MSRP or to discount it, again based on that MSRP.

Generally, the manufacturer's MSRP and the wholesaler's MSRP match. There are instances, however, where they don't. One case for me involves DCC components from a manufacturer that also sells through a wholesaler I deal with. I get a good discount, but the list price indicated on their website is actually a bit higher than the MSRP on the manufacturer's website.

What do I do? I could simply sell at the wholesaler's list price, but to save on consumer's confusion I simply base my discount on the manufacturer's MSRP.

    Still confused?

Most, but not all of the time. The initials MSRP stand for Manufacturers SUGGESTED Retail Price. Suggested does not equal Mandatory. There will be occasions when you'll see the individual retailer does mark above MSRP. But this is usually only a small amount.

25% of list price is a huge discount. Jump on that deal right away. The best we can do is 25% OFF retail.
In reality the acronym MSRP actually stands for "Manufacturer's suggested retail list price" The L being dropped over the years because acronyms beyond 4 letters are harder to remember and say. Try remembering and saying: COMADTACZONSOPAC

However, one shop we know posts a fictious higher "MSRP" than one manufacturer actually lists so it looks like they offer a bigger discount when in reality their actual discount to the customer is not as good.

Kudos to those of you that pay MSRP. Wished I had that kind of disposable income. In this day and age however the time spent finding a good deal searching for a “reasonable” price via the internet or phone is worth the money saved. I don’t begrudge any retailer a reasonable rate of return but don’t expect me to bleed out via the wallet for a luxury item that can, in the big scheme of financial things, easily (well sometimes painfully) be forgone. No wonder why the "bay" gets very few of my dollars these days.

PS, Thanks George (wig) and Deb (wag) for making the search 9 out of 10 times quite easy.

I certainly agree. Surely the original poster meant 25% "off" list price and not 25% "of" list price?
