    Hello everyone,

My name is Alan and this my first post to TrainBoard. I am a relatively new model railroader. I am preparing the space to build the Akron Canton & Youngstown circa 60-70. I'll spare you the details in this post. You can visit my blog to get the whole story if you wish.

Why is there no AC&Y in the fallen flags forum? Worse yet for me the AC&Y logo is not in the avatar selection. I'm bummed. Can new fallen flag forums be created? Can avatars be added? Does anyone other than me give a hoot about the AC&Y? :tb-sad:
Oh well, AC&Y or not, glad I stumbled across your forums. Thanks for allowing me to join in.

    Welcome aboard Alan.

We do not have forums for all FF railroads but we do have a feature called TrainBoard Groups where people can create their own group if they feel they can attract a following for their road.

If you can point us to a logo for your road our graphic artist may be willing to create an avatar and add it to the stock list.

    Sweet!

    AC&Y logo

I can supply art for the logo if you wish. The AC&Y doesn't seem to have much of a modeling following from what I can find. I'll check out Trainboard Groups.
    Thanks,

Welcome aboard; I'm a Fallen Flag fan also; a more popular one "SP". But become a supporter of the Trainboard and one of the nice benefits is a custom avatar done for you. Just provide an example and your usually set.
Enjoy the ride here the benefits don't end there it's just the beginning.:tb-wink:

I'm Not Gay But If I Were...

Yes, AC&Y's fleet color for road locomotives is yellow. Not a distinguished golden yellow like Union Pacific but rather a glow in the dark, where did the 70's go, isn't that pretty, shade of yellow. Still, I like it. The locos really stand out against scenery and in front of black and red oxide bland cars.

Some relief comes in their switcher color. Regular, seen it a dozen times, dark blue. It roughly matches the NW blue of the same era.

To date I have #200 - 207 of ACY H16-44's. All in flaming bright yellow!

Candy, to alter a Red Green saying "If the women don't find you handsome then they should find you with pretty locomotives". :)

Let me give you a hand with that. As a casual observer, let's call the freight car pics I saw on your layout a "Butter" yellow. and the engines an "enriched" yellow. (meaning a strong vibrant color) It;s not as funny as your name, but mine fits on the paint can.

And actulaly, I like the color as well. Welcome aboard!

OH, and one of your blog posts asked "How do you get the LK&O name out in the model railroading world" I'll repost this on the blog as well for him, but a lot of people do electronic railpasses. Essentially, you e-mail pictures of what a passenger's multi-ride pass or ticket might look like for the LK&O. In the old days, it was done by mail and you actually used them as permissions to visit a layout. But now, a lot of people just collect them, since there are a number of people in other countries who aren't likely to be able to see your layout.

The other thing you can do, is decal a railcar in LK&O, and do car exchanges. You mail an LK&O car to someone, and they send you back one of their cars. (permanent ownership) Then, when someone visits his layout (which could possibly be in another state) and says "What's the LK&O?" he can point them to you. This works better between free-lance people than getting another UP boxcar for the layout, but then again, that UP box means something.

    My IPO

    Flashwave,

I have read of both car exchange and railpasses on various forums but had not paid much attention since my layout is not RTR. Make no mistake, it will come to pass. But shucks, I am still working on getting the basement ready for it! When you read the blog you no doubt saw that what started out as simply a place to put the LK&O has turned into an entire basement finishing project complete with workshop and bath. It is turning out very nice and I am quite happy with it so far but with work and family (and posting on forums :D) time is had to come by.

Nonetheless, your endorsement has got me thinking. I am going to better familiarize myself with these so I am ready when the time comes. Thanks.

BTW the guy that posted the original question about visibility is the Marketing Communications Manager for the company I work for. He is searching hard for viable social media knowledge as it would apply to his department.

Sounds well, sound. I am amyself contemplating (since I have no place for a layout) doing the railpass or passes now, anything to keep my interst and energy going. So if ever you get tired of housework, mayhaps it'll be time to crack out a design just so you know what it is you are working for.

I THINK under "The Inspection Pit" forum there is a railpass exchange. I could be wrong however.

    Layout Design Underway

I'm confused. How can you offer railpasses for a non-existent railroad? Sounds like a dot com IPO! :)

I am hard at work on a layout design. There is a dedicated page on the blog for this work. When I have something public review worthy I will post it there and point everyone towards it. In the mean time I am wide open for layout suggestions and/or ideas. There is a Givens & Druthers tab if you wish to see the criteria.

Love the idea of exchanging cars.

    Ba-dum-pum.

Prolly is, but I is bored, and there is at least a photo diorama of a layout...

Was gonna ask about the Givens. I see your focus is more photo op than switching, but other than the grain and coal mine, are you including otheer switching photo ops? Sometimes, we like to reccomend the addsition of a few extra switching spots than you think you'll use, just so the layout stays fresh.

    Industries, Industries, Industries

Blog needs a bunch more work to be clear, huh?

Yes, there will be ample switching activities in the Brittain Yard area. Brittain Yard is in Akron OH rubber capital of the world. Or at least was the rubber capital in the 60's. I plan on the AC&Y component of the railroad having multiple rubber factory related industries to switch. I want them located in the general vicinity of Brittain Yard as opposed to spread out all over the layout. Not only will it be prototypical for the AC&Y but also the rubber industry utilized just about every type of car other than stock cars. The rubber industry theme will allow me to have a justifiably wide varied selection of rolling stock.

My design vision is Kitzmiller will have only a coal loader and Lapeer will have only the grain mill so I can maintain the illusion they are separate, independent locations from Brittain Yard. I want a fair amount of "open" terrain separating the 3 locales. If I place more industries in these two locations I will run out of separation room real fast.

Does that help better explain it? Do you see any obvious flaws in the design?

    Or, I could also be
    A) lousy at reading blogs
    B) COMPLETELY unfamiliar with the cities.

That makes perfect sense to me. Love the idea of seperation. In the plan itself, looking at the old railplan (May 30th) I'd shove the AC&Y uyard around the cruve a little more, and move the Lapeer Mine to the corner loop, aside the pop-up hole. On the new plan (utilizing the single walkway) I would the Lapeer Mill in the reversing loop closest to the doorway, the Britton Yard in the other loop in the center, and stick the Coal Mine on either the back right turn or the flat back wall. Why? This gives more space between the mine and the yard, and equalizes distances between the two. A coal mine can be as large or small as you want, and most versions I'm seeing in my head will fit perfectly in there in the alotted space you have.

Also, the layout masters will note there's no staging yard. Not a big deal, but I'll throw it out there.
