Does anyone out there know any details as to what passenger equipment Amtrak plans to order? I heard that it could come as early as this summer, but haven't heard anything offical yet. Anyone out there care to speculate on what will be ordered? I'd assume some more Viewliner sleepers and some diners. Any thoughts on more Superliners? Also, who would they get them from since Bombardier is busy with the Acelamess? I've also heard that more P42's were already ordered, but haven't heard the details of that yet. Thanks for the help!

haven't heard any details but they better get an order in soon. The Beech Grove facility had better gear up to get more cars repaired & back in service. Reggie

As to an order from Amtrak, there is one or two in the pipeline, just waiting for Congress to give the okay (possible this fall).
As to what would be ordered, this is the most likely:
    15-25 coaches
    5-7 diners
    10-12 sleepers
    15-20 deluxe sleepers (transcon luxury)
    7-8 lounges
    10-12 viewliners
    15-20 P42's
These orders are subject to change in numbers either up or down, but this is what Amtrak has on paper as to capital needs.

These are the capital needs as of June 1, 2000. Most of these cars are needed as part of the "Network Growth Strategy" that Amtrak announced awhile back.
This list, as posted above, is not, repeat, NOT set in stone. The order can be modified at any time, in any way.
Congress has the capital needs for the next Fiscal Year already, in the form of 3 different bills. (this is where I got the info). The bills do not have a number yet, when they do I will repost them.
Bill #1 would allow Amtrak $275 million over 2 years for capital expenditures, which includes new equipment.
Bill #2 would give Amtrak $155 million over 3 years for new equipment only, no other expenditures.
Bill #3 is a balance between the first 2. Amtrak would get $210 million over three years for new equipment and other capital expenditures (track maintainance etc).
