Unfortunately it appears the undec GP35 is not a good seller. However, in the prototype there are a good number of these working now for shortlines for which undecorated samples are the targeted market.

So is the data different with the SD40-2?

Thanks so much Joe for the SD40-2 update. Am keeping a very close tab on this baby. So you guys would only buy 2? Geez what a bunch of cheapskates. Me myself am looking to purchase at least
12, cause that is my favorite locomotive. It's not hard to figure why
everyone loves it so much. The long slinky racy look, as if nascar had it's stamp on it. Joe can you give an approximate time frame
    for release, 07, 08, 09?

    Time line

Not sure yet. I just got the time frame for the Chassis and Trucks figured out...plastic is designed for the shell, we just need to do the mold design and then get time in the tool room. Once I know when it goes next door I can give everyone a general heads up. All I can say right now...not cause I can't, just don't know. Right now we are tooling up the Z 40' PS1 without roof walks and short ladders and a new door. I think once that is finished we have an N scale project to get started. I'm thinking the design for the passenger cars will pretty fast...again tool time is critical to the schedule.

    Cheers

    Joe

    Joe,

As an N scaler chiming in here, is there a way we N scalers can gang up and convince the MT execs we will buy scads of passenger cars? Con-Cor doesn't have them any more and they will not replace their earlier offerings...

Joe, that's great News for us Z Heads! We better save some money for the upcoming releases. Hmm, I think 2007 will be an expensive Year. :)

Undec is best... Sure BN had 838 of these bad boys, but not everyone wants them in BN or UP, etc.:zip:
Undecs should sell very well...
That said, I want some in BN....:shade:

    Just a Thought!

When the GP35 came out, Z scalers went NutZ. Some good and some bad! No matter what roadname they could come out with first, will NEVER satisfy the masses.

When this first of its kind loco was released, so many people were not willing to wait for their roadname to appear! Hopefully sooner than later! Well, these people took it upon themselves to strip the PRR loco and repaint it to their liking.

This stripping/repainting was done by such a large portion of the active group members that their efforts were used to justify an Undec version being produced.

As I recall, Joe D' used these photos and info to get that Undec GP35 produced in hopes that they would sell as fast as the regular painted runs.

So many repaints, so much Undec wants, and the Undec GP35 release was a flop.

The masses had already stripped and repainted what they wanted so there was not that much demand for Undec's as what was perceived. This is where the Z masses of WANT let down our Z ambassador at MTL.

Where am I going with this? Right down the middle!!!! Actually, the only way an Undec SD40-2 release would be effective would be if it were released FIRST before any Painted Versions were released.

Now, question is, would Joe D' be willing to place his @$$ on the line again to request the first release be UNDECORATED? Hmmmmm

Best bet would be to stop him-hauling around and ask the man that direct question! Since no one has yet, I will be the first!

JOE D' How possible will it be that you would fight to make the first SD40-2 Release be in an Undecorated Version?

There, I did it! Now I will wait to see what Joe D' has to say! As far as me, I will wait for MTL to release the BN/AT&SF/BNSF SD40-2's.

Tim, great words...... lets take it a step further if Joe likes the idea......How about we start a post for him, and figure out in a "pre-order" fashion, how many would be wanted if they were offer as a first run.....

I for one would order at least two and possibly more.......

    Undec's...Haaa haaaaa haa aaaaaahhha ouch!!

Well, not sure that will happen right off, but I will bring it up at the next car meeting and duck. I think it would be a good thing to do, but I know marketing would be concerned it would cut into the initial releases...so how many decorated do we do as opposed to how many undecs we do...? Big question there. I will see what they say. As for the first paint schemes, very early to be saying that, but I am using the BN 1973 production as a model for the details, so I suspect one of the first will be BN...possibly MKT as well...would be my first two choices...SP, UP, DRGW, ATSF, SOO, CN, CP, Mlw...and it goes on and on. One of those engines I'll just buy all of to have them.

    Cheers

    Joe

    fyi joe,
D&RGW didn't have SD40-2s except in tunnel motor (SD40T-2) configuration. i'll still buy them, but i'd have to "fix" it to be more prototypical (i.e, tunnel motor).

I'm pulling for MTL marketing on this one John and hope they decide on an early CSX release.

So, you're only doing the Phase I SD40-2 with dynamics and standard nose?

    Good catch, David!
There's so many roads that used SD40-2's--a generic 1973 production model would suffice so loads of roads. (I'm a poet, and I didn't know it):p
Figure BN, UP, Mopac, Katy, Rock Island, Milwaukee Road, Conrail, CSX, ad nauseum. I apologize in advance if I left out anyone's favorite road...
If it is an SD40, (not the dash-2), like the topic title says, you can add SP, and other roads as well into that mix.:shade:

That means SP didn't own any SD40-2?

    That's correct, Dom.
The only SD40-2's SP owned were, like D&RGW, the SD40T-2's.
