Yes, I updated some pics on my web site, including this: [IMG]
This is an "SD40-2" that is a rebuilt unit in an SD40 body (one of many on CSX)

    Enjoy!

    Harold,
I have a question on the rebuilt SD-40-2's. They were rebuilt...OK. But were they rebuilt to a SD-40-2, or were they rebuilt into something more? If they were rebuilt into something else what are they really? I mean as what type loco? I know they have the SD-40-2 body but are they like SD-50's inside or something or what?

    John,
Off the top of my head, I think they were all rebuilt (possibly by PNC or other vendor) from SD40's to SD40-2 standards. This included "upgrading" them with dash-2 electricals, etc. I think the Chessie System had started a similar program early on, but their units may have been designated SD40R's ("R" for rebuilt).

    Harold,
I thought Chessie had something like that I wasn't to sure though... But anyway I didn't understand the rebuild to good and now that I know some I understand a little better on "why" and all now. But I can say that they made a decent choice on doing the rebuilds with SD-40 bodies. Nice body to a point! But still my favorite diesel body goes out to the GP-30 body style.. To bad they never made a SD-30 simular to the GP-30 and with a GP-30 with a high nose. I know they did but the blister on the roof from the dynamic brake unit didn't come all the way out to the end of the hood. It stoped at the cab on the high nose versions! :D I love that body syle and all I can't help myself! HA! I guess its just different and all and with the big dynamic brake blister on the tops of the long hood, it just makes it look "mean" I guess... And its not all "square" like the GP-40's and all were... I just hope I didn't offend anyone liking the GP-40's It was just an example of the "squared" style bodies.. :D

Chessie System did not have a program for its SD40's but did have a program for its SD35's and GP30/35 to be rebuilt.

However many Chessie SD40's were cycled though rebuilds, but they didnt get -2 elctronics till CSX.

    Harold,
Thats what I mean they had a program and all but the SD-40's weren't part of it... well not untill the CSX merger anyway... Very confusing subject! :D

All the major rebuilds I was made aware of during chessie were

    GP30M
    GP35M
SD18s (rebuilt when they were transfered from C&O to B&O)
    SD35

some of the GP7 AND GP9 were also rebuilt

there were also the SD20-2 (rebuilt SD35s)

Also every class receved at least one overhual in its life on Chessie, excluding some of the U-boats and GP40-2, GP15-1 and SD50s

Looks like that middle one is in red primer paint. It must be fresh out of the shop getting ready for new paint and lettering. I guess when they rebuild the old ones, they install electric starters, so the crew no longer has to hand crank them to start on a cold morning?

    (Boo, sorry!) :D

    Watash,
You are a funny guy! :D I actually REALLY like the first two units of this lashup: they are SD45's rebuilt to SD40-2 standards (16 cylinder engines and Dash 2 upgrades, versus their original 20 cylinder engines). The "primer" unit is owned by Helm leasing and uses this attractive burgandy scheme.....

Yeah, Harold, was it the Atlantic Coast Line that used a Maroon and silver paint scheme too? I have an SW1500 switcher painted that way. It had rubber bands running over the motor shaft, down to drums on each wheel, that have long since hardened and fallen off somewhere. Ha! It was a smooth runner while it lasted. :D

    Watash,
Yes it was the Atlantic Coast Line that had Marron and silver on their diesels. I believe they have had even yellow pin stripes if I'm not mistaken! :D
