Alan, that Berk and the Niagara are beautiful. As you can tell, I prefer the 12 inch to the foot scale, and am still grinning from my experience running the Pere Marquette 1225 last weekend. They are both Van Swearingen Berks.

I don't think O and M Van Sweringen had a lot to do with the actual introduction, design or any other actual aspect directly relating to the NKP and PM Berks; they were simply businessmen trying to assemble the largest and most profitable railway empire without falling foul of the federal monopoly laws of the day; it was a progression from that business philosophy onwards to the creation of a design panel for equipment which would be suitable for all roads in their empire and the adoption of the Lima superpower concept which in the context of motive power for fast freight service saw the development of the 2-8-4 type as exemplified by the NKP Berks.

If the Van Sweringens had been advised that plastic locos powered by rubber bands were what was needed for their business, that is what we would have seen!
