Thanks for posting its always great seeing prototype action. The diamond looks to be a full cast design these are designed for heavy duty and reduced wear.

Paul, what do you mean by "Full Cast"? What are the other options for those of us who give a bad name to "Totally Ignorant"?

Hey, I like to model trains, but I don't know Squat about Railroading....! [IMG]

    Matt,
It has been too hot (90 degrees + most of July) and too busy at work for me to do much railfanning lately...

My last pics were taken in Thomasville and Durham on 7/19.

    Matt,
Raleigh does not have a whole lot of action to photograph...
NS gets 349 & 350 (usually thru the yard, except it may have changed recently); sometimes a 351, and some assorted oddball trains, such as a coal train or grain train run thru....
    CSX sees a couple of trains: F741/742, 711/712 (?)
Amtrak runs thru... 73/74 and 79/80

    Harold,
How far do you live from the Amtrak Station in Raleigh?

Also how do you find out about the Freight train numbers like you used above? I know the Amtrak numbers but I have seen people post and say for example "NS 379 on leaving Columbia,SC and heading for Rock Hill,SC" How do you find out that info?

My dad also told me the other day he was reading the newspaper and in the Questions and Answers section someone wrote in and wanted to know how many trains were scheduled to come blasting through Harrisburg everyday and the guy at the Charlotte Observer answered that 25 freight trains were scheduled everyday. Anywhere online to find out this info?

Also Harold where exactly is the Linwood Yard? Could I just drive there and ask them for an application for NS?? If so I will go down there next Thursday. And what "Entry Level" position should I inquire about? Anything in particular?

    Matt,
I am about 8-10 miles from the Amtrak station.
The train numbers can be learned from a variety of sources: timetables, scanner, and discussion groups. Most trains have a schedule that is listed in the timetable as to their "symbol" and where they go and scheduled days and times. Odd number trains run North and East / even number trains South and west. For example 212 / 213 are daily intermodals that run thru Concord and you'll usually see 214 and maybe 24T.

Railroads have become a little more "secretive" about publishing their schedules to the general public. There very well could be 25 trains thru Harrisburg in a day. There are a bunch of other trains that use that line, such as 118 / 119, mixed freights, and locals.

Thanks for that information Harold. Where do I go to see a Timetable? I did some searches but found nothing.
