Is there anyone out there who was lucky enough to have been on a New York Central fan trip?
Way back on Oct 17,1954 I was on the trip behind 5412 that went from Toledo to Jackson.
Back in those days "run byes" were unheard of.They would stop the train ,everyone got off and walked around took a few pictures ,got back on the train and went to the next stop! Not too exciting but better than nothing.
The train was made up mainly of heavyweight coaches,
a combine, perhaps one Mercury coach and a Mercury observation car.Total of about 12 cars.
The trip was sponsered by the Toledo Chapter of the National Railroad Ass'n.
I was 18 years old at the time and one of the youngest people on the train.Tho there was a young girl who borrowed my jacket for part of the trip!
We were allowed to have full roaming of the Jackson yard, as I recall we were there for a couple of hours.
The engine and at least some of the cars were turned on a wye as the turntable wasn't long enougth for the 5412 and the PT tender.
At least two of the photos that I shot have sold on ebay recently! They were part of an estate that an eBay seller purchased.(I had traded photos with the late owner back in the 1960"s.)
I have seen very few photos of that trip. One or two are in one of Staufer's books.
    Thanks for watching,
    Ron Morse

Ron, good to hear from you. I'm posting your photo of a Hudson from an angle, as you said, seldom seen of a Hudson or any other locomotive.

That was a hot job. Filling the sand dome was right over the boiler, and even with all the lagging (insulating), that boiler was no place to sit!
