I unfortunately don't know much about the NYC, but I do have a question: I thought I had read somewhere that NYC recieved some of the (or THE) first GP40's produced. Can anyone confirm?

I followed a link posted to George Elwood's archives; here's an interesting photo of GP40 # 3000. It may be the camera angle, but it does not appear to have a horn or radiator fans! [IMG]

New York Central received 40 GP40s in very late 1965. These units were the first production 645 engined EMD locomotives. They were numbered NYC 3000-3039. The remaining 38 units of this order were sold to the C&NW by Conrail in 1982.

You can view a summary of all EMD GP40 production at this URL:

    **********

It confirms that NYC did receive the first order of GP40's from EMD in Dec 1965. It
shows there were 50 units in all, NYC3000-
3049. These were EMD serial numbers 30937-30986. For a detailed history of their
renumbering to PC, CR and beyond, see this
    URL:
    http://fuh_q.tripod.com/1965/30900.htm

    ****************

NYC went back to EMD in 1967 for two more orders -- NYC3050-3079 (EMD serial numbers 33214-33243), and NYC3080-3104 (EMD serial numbers 33491-33515). Unfortunately, the link on that website to their renumbering is not working.

All 105 units made it into CR according to the Conrail Cyclopedia at this URL:

Don, Please send more photos. Harold, is it possible that this was a builder's photo and was actually taken before all the accessories like horns were added? The radiator fans seem like a required item, though. No dynamic brakes, either.

I don't know the origin of the photo, whether it is builder or not. However, I doubt that it is a builder's photo, as I have never seen a builder's photo without the necessary fans..... missing horns I can live with.
