I'm trying to convince my employer to let me build a small display layout in the office. I'm thinking a dogbone 2'x10' or 2'x12' with room on the ends for loops. I normally model in HO, but I though O would be easier for visitors to see while they waited. I live in Mississippi and I thought On3 would be great because there were narrow gauge timber RRs through out the state logging pine. I thought it would be interesting to incorporate a little of the regions history to make it more relevant.

What is the availiablity of track and turnouts in On3. Is there a particularly good distributor? Structures shouldn't be to difficult, but I don't know much about narrow gauge motive power, especially in On3. I know I'd want at least 1 Shay, maybe a heisler or a small diesel as well. Is brass the only option or does anyone make a good plastic model?

Would it be easier to just go with the new On2 1/2 (On30) that Bachmann is producing since most people who saw the layout would not know the difference. Would it be possible to kitbash a HO MDC Shay into a light (30 or so tons) On2 1/2 Shay?

    Thanks,
    John Bursi

I would go with the On30 using the proper track. On3 gets real pricey. I think Dale Darney makes a conversion kit for the shay that turn out nice.
