Sterling, CO A loaded BNSF coal train pulls into Sterling, CO. BNSF 9683 sitting in the yard. Driving through town we came across this old BN car being used for storage. Here we found ATSF caboose 1581 on display at a museum. Ben
North Platte, Nebraska Being a railfan I convinced the family to schedule some time in North Platte. Last night we checked out the caboose / tourist information center. Later today we will check out the Golden Spike Tower. Ben
With it's tank painted up like this, it sure looks oversized. I'd imagine when full of water, that little loco had some great traction abilities. Boxcab E50
Ben, how long will you be in Minnesota? 4449, hopefully with me aboard, will arrive in Minneapolis on Thursday, July 9. :tb-biggrin:
Unfortunately we have to leave on the 5th. I had hoped to maybe catch it on our trip back home but it looks as if we will miss you. We will be headed up to Portland next June. Is it possible to view 4449 if it is not out on an excursion? Thanks, Ben
If you make it into the Twin Cities, take a drive to the junction of East River Road & Roman Road in Minneapolis. There's a HUGE switchyard there, you're guaranteed to get some great shots from the bridge there.
I was out & about today myself and I didn't see any trains in the 300 miles I traveled most of which were along side the UP main lines in Idaho. Bummer...
Thanks for the heads up. We actually headed from Grand Forks, ND over to Warroad, MN missing the twin cities. I had some internet connection issues and have not been able to update this topic as much as I had wanted too. Ben

From the language on that memorial, the North Platte station no longer stands? Seems rather sad, for such an important location? Boxcab E50
You are correct and I agree that it was sad to destroy such an important part of history. U.P. demolished it in 1973. You can read more about it here. This is the homepage for one of the Canteen's websites. Ben
