Although the CSW survived the move to our new home, I found the layout to be too bulky and cumbersome [IMG]. A friend of my eldest son really liked the layout, so I gave it to him lock, stock and barrel!! In one evening my "old friend" had disappeared from my life...but a new modeler was born in the kid I gave the layout to [IMG]!!
So what's next?? A new CSW will be built on some shelving that was in my garage when I moved in. Although I prefer open framework, the shelves were just too tempting...and I get more running room [IMG]!! Any experience with building on shelving would of course be appreciated (the shelves are thick cured press-board on metal L braces attached to the wall. The shelves are arranged in an L shape on two walls of the garage. Happy Modeling!!

    John,
Good luck with the new layout to me this is what modelling is all about. You have made someone else happy and brought them into our hobby. it also gives you a chance to further your experiences. It always feel so much rewarded when people come to see my layout especially when my wife shows her friends.

Might I make a suggestion? Have you thought of using foam insulation board for the layout base instead of wood? With the metal l brackets you could easily have a 2 foot wide shelf arround the walls. Foam is more than adiquet to support your trackwork and scenery, and has the advantag of not warping like the wood will.....Mike

Excellent idea Mike!! What thickness of foam board do you suggest?? I had been enternaining the idea of using foam to form the basic topography OVER the wood shelf, but why not all foam [IMG]!! Of course the wood shelving has been in place for a long time without warping, but who knows how long it will last under wet scenicing etc. Happy Modeling!!

I am thinking that the 4 inch would be ideal. That would let you carve some of it out to create below track details.....Mike

So where does one go to get the 4" foam?
Is this something you would get at a building supply such as Home Depot?
Please excuse my ignorance on this. I guess
I have wood on the brain. [IMG]

JCater, you might have to go to a larger town like Denver. Here in the Dallas/Ft.Worth Metroplex we would just call C.P.Waggoner Plastics Co, and get any kind of plastic available. They will slit, chop, and slice to any size you want. Look in your Yellow Pages under plastics suppliers. Mildew will grow between wood and foam if there is a constantly damp dark atmosphere, so paint the underside before starting. You can always laminate two 2" ers to make the 4".

Home Depot, Menards, Wicks, ETC. Any Home Improvement/Lumber Yard will have this stuff. It's pretty common stuff so it's easy to find, save yourself the drive and "phone first". It's commonly called extruded insulation board...
