I was at Caboose Hobbies Friday to pick up my special order of NWSL P87 wheelsets and saw that the SD60s had come in. I don't know when they arrived but i think it was not much sooner than when i got there! Anyway the model is in a word superb! I can't wait for those Oakways! I was almost tempted to grab an undec but didn't. Test ran em and everything... I'm guessing there's a review in the latest issue of MR but i haven't got my issue yet but i think that's because of the holidays.

I was talking with the resident diesel fanatics, and Steve Orr(sp) was talking about the possibility of the SD50 next- along with widecabs, which should be excellent!

Did i mention i couldn't wait for the Oakways? [IMG]

Steve Orth is what i think i should have said! I guess the P2K guys wouldn't admit planning an SD50 but said "if the models/molds are almost identical, well..."

I was thinking about the SD50 roadnames and here's what i came up-

    Rio Grande
    Union Pacific (Mopac?)
    Southern Pacific
    Seaboard
    Chessie
    Conrail

    Any more?

Don't forget Norfolk Southern and Chicago & North Western. As for the Conrail SD50's, I think most, if not all of them, ride on Flexicoil trucks. Now if P2k does make them, it would be cool if they modeled that feature. The possibility of them making an SD50 and/or SD60M was tossed around on the Dlist not too long ago; with the common frame either is possible. I kinda hope they don't do SD50's; they'd make me go broke! [IMG] I know I'd sign up for a bunch of undecs.....let's see, I need 3 for DRGW, 1-2 for Espee, 2 for CSX YN2(pool power!), 1 for NS, 1 for.....

Sorry Mankind, all of CSX's SD50's are busy helping trains on the M&K Sub-division and Cumberland coal route here in West Virginia.

    Don't forget Kansas City Southern's SD50s.
Nombered 704-713, they cam on the property right after the SD40Xs (700-703). Either in white or gray, they look good mixed in with the SD60s, SD40-2s, and rebuilt SD45s.

Maybe so, but that didn't stop Espee, and now UP, from "borrowing" one or two every now and then! [IMG] Shot CSX 8576 a few weeks ago on a stack train down in Long Beach harbor. That YN2 scheme looks nice mixed with the Espee gray and scarlet...you'd better make sure CSX keeps them moving, or we might "borrow" some more of them! [IMG] LOL

    From what i heard, i'm expecting SD50s and SD60Ms...

Whoa Chessie, with all those variations i don't know! I think they might put up the choices and throw a few darts! [IMG]

I knew i'd forget a few ie, CNW and NS... [IMG]

The KCS ones were built in 81'; are they on the SD40 frame? I know we were discussing a photo of one not long ago-

Regarding the trucks P2K did make the early Flexicoil so you never know. The CSX SD60s models don't have class lights(most other names have em) either so it's obvious P2K will make variations.

KCS had both variety of SD50; the testbed units, designated SD40X, numbered 700-703, built in 9/79, and production SD50, 704-713, built in mid-81'. C'mon Proto, make an SD50, I'm tired of having money in my bank account.... [IMG]

Thanks for the clarification. Here is page showing production dates- http://fuh_q.tripod.com/model/sd50.htm

It looks like it took other roads awhile to decide they wanted the SD50! Or else EMD wasn't quite ready to build em yet! [IMG]

Yowza, I just picked up a P2k SD60 today, and man, am I impressed! Proto really did a nice job on this unit; it makes me look forward to other modern units from them. The sucker is heavy, too, over a pound and a half; should be able to pull plenty of cars with this one! Detail is excellent; lots of separate details never seen before on a factory plastic loco, like step/running lights, and air dryers. The separate dynamic brake blower motor is another neat touch. Very nice indeed; the shell looks really nice, the one I picked up being an undec. Only gripes I have with the unit are minor, rivet-counter type stuff:

    1. Nose looks too short; on another list, it was mentioned the nose comes out to 84", when it should be 88". I haven't had a chance to measure mine yet, but it does look a little too short; it's really noticeable on the conductors side, there isn't enough space between the brakewheel mount and where the angle on the nose begins. No problem; if it is indeed too short, Cannon to the rescue!

    2. Bottom step on the stepwell is too shallow. Can be fixed with A-Line etched steps.

Minor rivet-counter stuff aside, it's a really nice unit....makes me drool to think they might follow up with an SD50! [IMG]

I was too 'awestruck' to start looking for errors but it doesn't sound too bad...
I'll probably replace the windows as well. Well see when the Oakways get here...

It has the same DCC setup as the GP7/30s right? I don't recall.

From what I've read in the MR Product Review, this bad boy will pull like no one's business- did I read 93 cars???? Just imagine what TWO cound do. Tunnel, you're in for a treat when those Oakways come out [IMG]
Even with the little imperfections, it's STILL a sweet-looking diesel!

I have a fealing Proto will milk this model for all its worth. Every thing similar.

I can see a hole rainbow of engines I can't even tell the differences between sitting in the ready track! [IMG]

I just hope they correct the nose on the next run! I was studying the picture of the model in the review in MR and you can clearly see it's about 4" or so too short, which is ridiculous in a model that is so good in every other respect...

I think i'll send them an email right now regarding that.

[IMG] I couldn't find any way of contacting them...

I agree with you on that one...it's a shame such a nice model has such a preventable flaw, but that's life I guess. I don't know if Proto would tool up a new nose section so late in the game, but hey, trying to email them about it is worth a shot! [IMG] In the meantime, Cannon parts can fix any shortcomings. I've installed Cannon anticlimbers, cab, nose, toilet hatch, subbase, and dustbin hatch, and an already good looking model looks even better; the Cannon stuff looks nice, and the difference in the nose is noticeable.
