NYC Paris, Illinois Big 4 Depot

    Again, do not have a date on this old post card featuring the NYC/Big 4 depot and main line at Paris, Illinois. However, based on the motive power on the head end of the Eastbound in the siding, it must be prior to 1920. Also, considering the short consist, the train on the siding might even be a Cairo line train, making its station stop at Paris.

    Many of the larger roads started to scrap even the eight wheelers built after 1900 in the mid to late 1920s, Some did keep a few around into the 1930s. Chicago and Illinois Midland actually had three built in the late 1920s which went to scrap only because the road discontinued passenger service. The baggage/RPO looks to be steel, as do the coaches. Use of steel cars on a branch line local would suggest a date after 1920, although that eight wheeler looks to be in pretty good shape for a locomotive that would be twenty-five, or more, years old if the photograph were taken after 1920. The mantle clock headlight suggests a build date before 1895, but, some roads had those type of headlights on locomotives built even in the early 1900s (the Q, for one). The headlight does appear to have had an electric light put into the fixture. More than one road did that with the oil light fixtures.

    Nice photograph. I have seen several photographs of that depot taken over the years, but never have I seen that one.

    Is that a water tank, beyond the depot? With what seems to be a flag pole atop?
