A customer of mine had this sitting on their counter. Not sure where this would have come from. It's kinda unique and wondered if anyone knew what this plaque was for. Sent from my SM-G900V using Tapatalk
And probably not a box car? That's usually just painted on the side. Maybe a car where that was bolted to the frame? Or maybe that was something that was also bolted to the frame even if it was painted on the car. Jason
I'm wondering when they stopped applying these castings, and simply paint stenciled? They were all painted during my time in the industry.
I was thinking maybe it was off of a caboose or a passenger car. All I know is its cool and made of bronze.. Her husband works for U.P. and found this at an auction.
That was from a locomotive. one of the trusts set up to finance bankruptcy improvements. I'll guess GP38-2.
Could be from a C415. You can see similar plaque just past the cab on the sill in this picture. http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1766916 Jason
I was also going to say locomotive, simply because the economics often resulted in those being property of a bank or the like even when "owned" by the railroad, much the same way as the title of a car will read until its paid off.
Lot's of freight cars were under similar leases. But as we said before, it was usually part of the lettering on the car. The letters are usually so small, I'm sure many people haven't noticed it too much. Jason
A lot of the 70's diesels I worked on had a similar, but cheaper, plate on their sills. Talking GP and SD -2's built up through the early 80's. Usually just stainless steel, stamped and with black paint on them to highlight the lettering. Used to have one, but think I sold it off at some trainshow or other. The cast plate is MUCH cooler!
