Thanks for clearing that up. I had heard parts of it in the background some place but never put it together.

Um, guys, In looking at the Federal reports, UP is the ones calling the shots, even proposed the idea of using BNSF to maintain competition in areas where UP and SP are partners. And UP changed the SP corporate name. Asisde from one comment I saw of UP using the DRGW Utah-based company, they were completyely in control, and it sounds more like the slipped into the DRGW like a pair of new clothes than the DRGW did it. It may have been a lateral merger, not a takeover, but I dont see anything that says SP did it.

So what info are you using, so the lot of us can get a complete picture?

You are correct, UP took over, but for tax purposes, it went the other way.

I have a friend of mine that handed me 2 GP 38-2's that wants them painted in Ugly Putred canary yellow and armour grey. I asked him why since he modeled the DRGW? He said simple, I want you to ONLY paint them in that color but black out the UP numbers and letters in Black and stencil them for the DRGW took over the UP. I LOVE this idea! The reason for this, and I wont get into too much detail here is simple. The way UP went about their whole trademarking ordeal in my opinion was ridiculous. In fact it was so ridiculous that I "hawked" all my UP equipment on my roster. Locos, cabooses, and cars included!

    Ah ha.

And for no good reason at all, it's Armour Yellow, and Harbor Mist Grey. Not the other way around. It'll be easier to find the paint. :D

And it really is Armour Yellow. They did at one time use yellow from the Armour meat company reefers.

You can look at my signature and see what I think of the UP. You can patch all the UP locos you want to SP, just leave the MOP alone...and your right, it's personal.:lightning:

    SP Patch

The evil thought of sneaking into the roundhouse where U.P. 844 is kept and painting it SP Grey with the red "wings" on the elephant ears and a SP on the smokebox crosses my mind from time to time.:tb-biggrin:

Oh now let them have there Elephant ears. We've got a prettier girl down at Brooklyn.

now, if, next time 3985 were in town we were to turn her around so the cab was on the proper end, That I wouldn't mind.

I'm not gonna get worked up over UP units patched for other railroads, nor do I care to dwell on who controls who in real life. It's all in fun, right?

Besides, I'm more interested in patching Bad News diesels for Frisco, anyway.......:tb-biggrin::tb-biggrin::tb-biggrin::tb-biggrin:

Hold on to your hats, 844, is heading to the Pacific Northwest.

I did here a story from the 4449-844 doubleheader, that they were gonna unhook the two on the fly. When 844's brakeman pulled the cut lever, he stuck a placard on 4449's tender that said "Send to Home Shop for Repairs" as a joke. Them's fightin' words.

Nah, I wouldn't patch 844, she always was UP, and for not being the 4449, she's still a steamer, and deserves some respect. Besides, she's not Armour Yellow.

Ultimate Predator, Ugly Putrid, Unle Pete--back in 1997, it was Unlimited Parking.
As for the 844, she's far too classy to mess with. She looks quite striking in Greyhound scheme, and if any patching would be done, it would be the 3985.

D&RGW had identical engines, L-97 class, 3800-series. A friend of mine in the steam crew is a former SP/D&RGW man, and jokingly suggested repainting the 3985's tender with a Flying Rio Grande herald, and 3801 on the cab...

War Production Board in the 40's took a D&RGW Baldwin order and converted it into an Alco order for UP Challengers, tacking 6 locos onto the UP order. The Baldwin design created additional lead time, parts,a nd other requirements that the WPB couldn't deal with,a nd made the order simpler by making them of all one design. D&RGW disliked them, as they were lightfooted, slippery on tough grades, and not as powerful as their spectacular L-105 Baldwins of the 3700 class. D&RGW refused to buy them, and resorted to a lease arrangement.
All 6 engines spent their years in Utah, hauling fast freight on the lighter grades, and were swiftly returned to WPB after the war. Clinchfield picked them up, and numbered them in the 600-class.
