I usually spend an hour or so a day looking at the live railcam site (with sound) from Mierlo-Hout in the Netherlands. Tonight when I tried to get on, I got a picture and message that said the site had been hacked by some Turkish hacker. I hope they can clean it up. I miss it already. They run over 150 trains a day, commuter, intercity, and freight.

    Dave.

They seem to be returning slowly to somewhat normal.

the question I would have is why someone would hack into a railcam website. The fact
that it originated in Turkey leads only to wild speculation.

Actually this kind of occurance is fairly common. A hacker creates a search program to scan and test IP addresses, of which there are hundreds of millions, if not billions. The search program flags what appear to valid user addresses. The hacker will then examine each personally to see if it worth his/her time to follow up for identity theft or creating online havoc, which in this case probably is not. That the hacker showed a Turkish address only means that was the address of the last server used in a series of servers. In most cases people like this route through multiple minimally secure and unsuspecting servers to "launder" the true origin of the search program. Sadly, most of these "used" servers are owned by folks who have set up personal servers in their homes, but don't understand strict server security. College and university servers are also used because of their open-access and data-sharing policies.

Hackers themselves should be hacked... with a machete ;)
