Thanks guys! Ben, you should have! I might still be here come Saturday, if so, we could add to your UP colo thread again Mike
Man I would love to go out again but this weekend doesn't look promising. I'll give you a shout if something changes. Ben
And I'll guarantee you that train was moving no faster than about 20 MPH. That grade is a nasty 2.4%!! That's the way it was for the Rio Grande: nasty grades, loads of helpers. Why else do you think I like it?
Nice photos:thumbs_up: The power mid train:whats the reasons for head lights?I noticed lights on first and last loco are on. Cheers Stu.
Those are the rebuilt MK5000C's. They were rebuilt into what they call the MK50-3. They ripped the hood off, took out the caterpillar motor and replaced it with an EMD prime mover and placed SD50 hoods on the MK5000C frames. Pretty much turned them into a glorified SD50. They have a total of 6 of them numbered 5001-5006. I am currently bashing one out of an Athearn SD50. Looking good so far. Will post pics soon I hope. You will also see the EMD/Clyde australian built SD50's on them as well. They are numbered 6060-6065. They are 6 feet shorter than US built EMD sd50's.
Decided to go down to Helper and Price today for a little photo shoot for the layout. Ended up being a great day to see trains too. Started out from NSL and saw one in the narrows heading to salt lake. Couldn't stop for photos had to keep on moving. Finally got to Kyune, no train in sight. After taking a few pics for the layout we started to head out but then I saw hoppers. A UP coal drag in the Kyune siding. Clicked some pics then headed to Helper where there was another coal drag waiting to head out. Went about my photo shoot then started back home around 4:30. Coal drag in Helper was now gone. We found it stopped at the Colton siding. Found out why when we got to Gilluly. Three eastbounds coming up the canyon. One empty hoppers with a BNSF engine on the lead followed by another BNSF manifest. Then right behind those two was a Utah RR with four of the MK units pulling a string of empties. What a day. Enjoy the pics.
yes it was. I was surprised as well. Three different railroads on the provo sub. Only one missing was amtrak but they go through realy early or really late.
Well I took a little trip over to Utah last week and this is what I caught. The day started out good when I paced a west bound UP freight train that had departed GJT. I was able to get far enough ahead of it to catch a few shots. The train was moving fast so this fat boy and my son ran to the top of a hill to capture the images just east of Crescent Junction. Wood chip cars from Montrose, CO. Ben
So as we proceeded on to Soldier Summit I was in need of a rest area. Remembering last year Utah had realigned part of the highway and demolished one of my favorite rest stops I had high hopes that they had built a new one. As luck would have it they did, and low and behold it has a railroad theme! :tb-biggrin: Behind the main building was a structure built to resemble a roundhouse with a creation of a mock up of an engine. The tracks run adjacent to the rest stop and would make for a good area to do some railfanning in the future. Ben
The train activity on Soldier Summit was dead due to UP MOW crews replacing ties at several crossings. We proceeded to our destination in Ogden, Utah. After checking in at the hotel I ventured out to see if I could find something "Red" for the Prototype Photo Contest. Ben
