You're doing a fine job. Great progress. That bridge will be a top spot to shoot a few locos.

    Video Update 8-7-12

Here is a short video, about 2 min of a run-through on a couple of the completed scenes of the RGW. Did this quick, phone in one hand, throttle in the other so not my best video effort, but you get the gist of it. M

    Light test.

Here are two shots of LED bright white lights we are trying out for underdeck lighting. A stark contrast to can lights.

    BN 7309 Run-Through

Here is a 65 second clip of a run-through during the NMRA tours the weekend of the 19th.

This train ran for five (5) consecutive hours without a single issue on our upper line. Very proud of that. Pays to take your time with trackwork! MRH

Soaring in the sky. I like those types of shot angles.

What's the picture frame sitting on that bridge?

My tribute to Dick Molzahn who built the bridge in pic 2 before passing from Alzheimer's.

It's been a while since my last post. So, thought I would update you with some pictures of our scenery progress. Enjoy:

The first photo gives you an idea of how our scenery progresses. First, we put in the blue foam and shape it to the contours we are looking for. Second, we paint the scene a suitable brown color and third we begin the ground foam.

In the second picture, you can see that we have added rock formations and colored them with a painting technique using diluted acrylic paints. We then fill in around those rock formations with basic scenery and will fill in later with multiple layers of ground foam and foliage where desired.

The final picture shows a technique we are using to cover seams for removable panels. These panels are necessary to access hidden track. We started with wax paper then applied multiple layers of plaster cloth in an irregular pattern. Once dried, we remove the wax paper and glue the left side of the patch to a panel. We leave the right side free to move so the individual panel can be removed.

In the next steps we will paint the cloth, scenic in between the patches and finally cover the patches with lichen. The lichen will be sprinkled with yellow ground foam to simulate scotch broom, a nasty, but abundant plant here in the northwest.

Thanks for looking in on our progress.

To follow up on pic 3 in post 112, here is a pic following phase 3 of the project, applying lichen to the patches. The lichen is a great application here. By randomly applying the lichen to the patch, you get awesome color and texture variations. Once the contact cement is dry, we'll come back and sprinkle in the yellow ground foam.

Here are more shots of scenery progress. First one is the next improvement on the NW wall, filling in open spaces to blend patches to each other. There is still much to do there, but this blending is essential to get scene to look right.

Last three are shots of rock outcroppings on the south side of Franklin peninsula and a shot of the mine hillside in Franklin.

Latest shot of patch area with first layer of yellow ground foam applied.

Still have more to do; including yellow highlights and more color and coarse foams on areas between patches. M

A quick update from tonight's work session. First and foremost we set upon the path to build the helix. While the actual construction is probably two or three weeks from now, we laid out sample cuts to ensure our dimensions and angles will achieve our goals.

    uploadfromtaptalk1360134117990.jpg uploadfromtaptalk1360134136391.jpg

We will be utilizing the "KCT Helix" method. Using 3/8 plywood in roughly 8 inch by 5 inch dimensions to complete a full circle of the helix, then overlapping a second layer with glue and screws connecting each layer. When the first layer completes a circle, the layers will be separated by wax paper until all 6 turns are finished.

We will then let the helix completely harden before drilling holes every 16 inches for 3/8 threaded rod. The rod will then allow us to set the grade, in our case 2 degrees.

In other developments, we began taking out the mainline return loops, which were always meant to be temporary. This step marks a new chapter in the construction of the RGW. From this point forward we will be constructing the connecting table sections that complete the railroad and tie in all four levels via the new helix.

Thanks for checking in. More later. M

I'm not familiar with that helix construction method, so it will be very interesting to see the photos.
