Many were used for hauling water, fuels, lubricants. Later converted to section crew use: water, fire, weed control....

Two boxcars here, one of an LV 50' at Taylor, PA in Nov. 1981 and a 40' L&C at Rockton, SC at the South Carolina Railroad Museum in March 1993. South Carolina's L&C was long owned by a large textile manufacturer and is now a Gulf & Ohio Railways property.

"A Day Late and a Dollar Short"

A rare appearance of a former ATSF GP60M on the BNSF Glasgow Sub at MP 3, once a staple of hot intermodals through the arid southwest corridor, leads a baretable move from storage on the Grenora Sub, near Powers Lake, ND. The title of this photo just speaks to the fact the sun set five minutes before the dispatcher provided signal indication to proceed from CP Gassman, not far to the west. The soft glow of the atmosphere glints from the flanks. Thanks again to the railfan tip that made this shot possible!

While that may be a ballast train, CR had ballast (express) locos:

I was talking to my brother earlier today (he's also a BNSF engineer) and he mentioned having to go up the Grenora Sub to get a baretable out of storage. I remembered seeing this thread so I asked if he had a GP60M on the head end. Yep, sure enough that's him in the cab.

OHIO leads the world in 'lectric train tech!!! Notice the stealth catenary!!

I can't find a link to the facts, but I believe that this was a demo of electric intercity trains for OHIO (never happened). The train stopped in Springfield OH (about 30 years ago) and was packed with political VIP's, but I suspect no citizens who would have used the service!

That was the X2000 train Amtrak leased for about a year to evaluate when they were developing the specifications for the Acela Express trains.
It was used in revenue service on the Northeast Corridor for a few months and also went on a national tour, using diesel locos where there was no overhead power available.
I recall that Amtrak had the train on display at the local station one weekend and I was able to walk through it.
    More details here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/X_2000#Exports

At about the same time, Amtrak also brought over from Germany a high-speed ICE train for evaluation.
Here are both trains, across the platform from one another at Penn Station in New York:

An interesting juxtaposition is the X2000 opposite a Strasburg steam loco:
