The little Klossner, MN (just north of New Ulm) depot reminds me of the little one at Lena, MN, between highway 52 and Mazeppa, MN, which hasn't been there for many years and was just a station the C&NW built and gave a name for farmers to leave their milk to be loaded onto trains. There was no actual town. There is an actual town for Klossner, however, as small as it is. Doug
Okay, inquiring minds need to know, how in tarnation did that happen. Engine backed into counterweight? Engine was parked at the edge of bridge when it went up? Are there cars on the lift span that were coupled to the locomotive? Was the locomotive under way and try to get off the lift span and just about made it but got stuck with the rear truck hooked over the end of track? Other suggestions?
Yes, if you're in to this sort of thing, the pictures blow your mind. When these were first posted some ~10 years ago, I spent many pleasant evenings looking through them and I, along with others, participated in discussions to help identity the locations. Even after many years, I still love paging through these images.
It's fun when you find a photo from your own collection that's from the same location that Mr. Barriger visited. Here's the LV main at Easton, PA in the 1930s and in August 1980. Nothing much of anything remains here today, though NS keeps the line busy.
Literally out to pasture. Retired in-place. There's no spur here... Northern Plains Railroad, Grano, ND"
The Mississippi River bridge at Keithsburg, IL. That engineer should be thankful. Hitting that counterweight saved the crew's lives.
Interesting newspaper article describing the incident. What cracks me up is the last line in the article on the incident: "Many people have been in Keithsburg too see the engine and bridge." Rubberneckers... Reminds me of many even older photos of train wrecks in some of my books, and people flocking to the site to see them. Sometimes to have their picture taken with the wreck, standing proudly, posing for the camera. Now they take selfies...
Wow!! That plow in a field! And where is Grano? Definitely north of Minot, at the end of the road! Then EMD 4 looking shiny new! And to top it off, a big beautifull PRR Mountain!! Oh, yes!! And so I submit, a poor shot or two of some MRL blue taken yesterday...
