For N scale vehicles, I find Woodland Scenics is best. Many come with people and tell a small story.

For figures, again Woodland Scenics, and also Preiser. I find Noch figures to be more expensive.

Preiser figures have the best proportions, best to buy unpainted and choose your own colours-saves money too. Showcase Miniatures and GHQ make nice vehicle kits. dq2.jpg

I have N-scale figures from Kato, W/S, Noch and Preiser. The Prieser are all significantly smaller, at least all of the sets I've bought.

I really like Classic Metal Works and Wiking for autos in N but can't really use most for what I am doing - Kato and TomyTec are what most of mine are. I do like their quality a lot, though.

Thanks for your input everyone, will have to go to a LHS and check them out. Closest LHS is
    an hour plus drive.

A lot depends on how detailed you want, how many you need, and with vehicles what era you are doing. All the above options are good.....but also pricey. A 5 figure set of figures may set you back $20 or more........if you need 100 figures for a crowd scene, you're looking at $400. What I do is only use the "good figures" in key scenes, when I need specific figures (like painters or football players), and near the front of the layout. You can pick up 100 packs of figures for 5 or 6 bucks on ebay.......you'll need to paint them (even the ones that come painted) to get decent results, but the cost savings is huge.

With vehicles, you run into the same thing. Depending on vintage, MiniMetals usually start around $25 retail (less on ebay) for a 2 pack, although some out of production items can top $50 . Again if you need a lot of vehicles for a parking lot or car dealership it can ad up quickly. WS vehicles are nice, but as noted, they usually come in a "scene" with some figures.....figure $15 to 20. Also WS vehicles are generic.....to avoid licensing fees, WS just makes "cars"......no Fords or Chevys......so if you want accuracy they aren't a good choice. On the flip side, they make about the only lighted vehicles out there, but again, they are generic vehicles. Some eras are covered better (like the 50's) than others.

So "best" sort of depends on your pocket book.

You can get an idea of what many of the "ready to use" N scale vehicles look like here: https://nscalevehicles.org/resources/models_era.php

There have not been any updates to these pages since March 2013, so models released after that date are not featured. If you have a specific era in mind, I could probably post photos of the "missing" vehicles. I am also working on including more of the kits, but many that I have still need to be built, or at least painted. :(

Also, I have a lot of photos of N scale and near N scale vehicles posted in RailImages: https://www.trainboard.com/highball/index.php?media/users/cfritschle.5852/

Hopefully you have a hobby shop that stocks N scale vehicle models.

Hi Ed, One of the folks who posts here on the Train Board, Brian Fedoroff, has an excellent selection of N scale vehicles from the 1940's thru the Mid 2000's. If you don't mind assembling and painting the vehicles, these cars and trucks are very well detailed at a very affordable price.
I've attached his latest catalog in pdf format to this post. His email address is listed in the catalog.

Also I've been told Brian will be at the Altoona N scale Weekend this coming September.
