I am going to Moscow and then St. Petersburg on business in a couple of weeks. Will be taking the train between the two cities. Anyone know what I can expect as far as railfanning goes?
You can count on that. I have 3 free days while I am over there so I hope to spend at least 2 half days looking for and photographing trains.
And Richard, be sure to take some time to do the Moscow subways. One of those rare things - original art in the stations. I remember marveling at the poverty and nothing working up above, but the subway trains were always on time and clean, and the stations were clean and full of art on the walls and celings. Didn't have my camera with me then, because that was the last thing I expected... but now you've been alerted!
William and All, I am now in Stupino Russia. (about 100km south of Moscow) There is a very busy rail line running next to the facility I am visiting. Can't wait for the rain to stop so I can get out and take some photos.
I'm in Stupino for a computer system conversion at the M&M/Mars plant/warehouse. Has gone smooth so far and the sun is finally out today so I'm hoping to knock off early and head downtown to the passenger station for an afternoon of railfanning!
I was able to get up to the train station in Stupino for about an hour and a half this afternoon. Saw 14 trains in 90 minutes. A few were freights but most were passenger trains. Will have plenty of pictures to share when I get home. Would post them now but don't have any photo reduction software on my laptop.
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back and get some photos posted. Managed to bring back a souvineer case of the flu and some ear problems. So, as you can guess, I have been a little under the weather since returning. Finally starting to feel better and wanted to share some photos. Hope you all enjoy them. These were taken at the train station in Stupino Russia. This town is about 100km (62 miles) south of Moscow. [ May 17, 2005, 01:56 PM: Message edited by: BNSF FAN ]
And here is one of my favorite shots from the trip. This was taken at the train station in Moscow. It reminds me of an Alco at work.
Nice photos Richard. Interesting how they pair their freight locos. I think one of the US western roads pair theirs the same way years ago. Maybe it was the MILW....?
Thanks - great pictures! Whoever thought the old regime would use the spy resources to clone an Alco?
Good to see pictures from unusual places. The tracks are very spaced out at the first location. And just look at that outside braced boxcar behind the two-unit electric loco The smokin' switcher looks great!
