Here's my next project along 9th Street in downtown Modesto. The J.S. West mill complex. The prototype complex takes up an entire city block, and includes a furniture store and feed store along with the mill. I don't have room for the furniture store and am going to have to relocate the feed store, but I'm going to try to do all of the silos and hoppers. It seems like a pretty cool project as it's a pretty compact operation. Lots of details though!

Here's a few prototype pictures - the first one is mine from 1998, the others are compliments of Google Maps:

Some more progress. I'm having to do a bit of compression, the low building is not exactly to scale, and I'm going to put the feed mill building across the street since my 'lot' is narrower than the prototype. I figure on my next layout I can give myself more room and just widen the low building, but still use everything else as it will be sized right. Nothing is fastened down yet, and I need to square up some of the supports still.

Looking at the pictures, the 2 round silos may be a bit tall - what do you think?

This is a real scratchbuild project by dave n. It goes from photographs of the prototype to the final structure on the layout. The detail is excellent. This structure uses PVC pipe for silos as well as brass and styrene structure and details.

Here is a link to the thread started in 2009. Great reading and some real inspiration.
