Thought I'd survey you folks to get your perference for structures. ScratchBuilt, Kitbashed, or Shake the Box?

I do all three but I think I am beginning to prefer scratchbuilding and Kitbashing. Both seem to stretch my hobby dollar.

I also do all three cause there are times that the only way to get what you really want is by kitbashing(my favorite) or scratch building.Even shake the box gets new paint and details.

I am with you guys. Once I started scratchbuilding I find kits just don't give me what I want anymore. I still do some kitbashing and actually still have a couple of kits still to build. Scratchbuilding opens up all kinds of possibilities. If you haven't already done so, you should at least give it a try.

I will use a kit when one is available for the structure I want, but it will always be altered in some way, either just to make it a bit different from everyonme else's, or to fit the space available.

Scratchbuilding is also good to get something unique, and to fit where no ready produced kit will fit. Sometimes scratchbuilt extensions to available models works well.

"ALL FOR ONE AND ONE FOR ALL!"

Yeap, I do all three too. Like others have said, I'll alter a "shake the box" somehow anyway. I'll even change buildings that I've bought from others.

... so with this theory if I leave my kits stock then it will be different to all others, as everyone changes theirs?? [IMG]

I am a proponent of kitbashing and scratchbuilding. I agree with Robin's statement

I Kitbash, Shake the box, and pic up something people already Scratch built. I would love to scratchbuild, but there are a few things I wanna learn to do, or get better at first. Mainly the ever exciting wiring that haunts most modellers [IMG]

    Happy Railroading!!

I'm like a lot of you guys, I LOVE to scratch build!!!!!

You get so much more satisfaction when you do something your self to when you have someone else provide you with everything.

    Try it if you haven't!

I don't mind trying to "bash" or "scratch" a building, but rolling stock or loco's, [IMG] NO WAY! I have "scratched" a few detail parts for my loco's, but as soon as a better part was availible, they were gone.

You are sure right. It is one thing to scratch build a structure. It is completely another to scratch build a locomotive or a car. There is no doubt this is what distuinguishes the truly great MRR from the average MRR. (That would make me average.)

One of the (it may be "the") Master Model Railroader(s) here in Regina can scratch build locomotives both diesal and steam you would swear are commercial models. Wow!!
