Can anyone tell me if Santa Fe's SD45-2's ever wore the "dress blue" scheme, or only the yellow/blue warbonnet?

Yes, the SD45 came delivered in the "Dress Blue" or "Cigar Band" paint. Just as did the SD40's.

Brent is technically correct on the SD45-2's wearing the old blue and yellow, at least the first order. Volume two of Paired Rails Diesels of the Santa Fe says the 1st order, numbers 5625-5661 were delivered in the old blue and yellow and repainted shortly after arrival. The send order, numbers 5687-5704 were delivered in the blue and yellow warbonnet, so they never wore the older scheme. The third order also was delivered in warbonnet. Number 5687 was the first of the SD45-2's to wear the warbonnet.

Thank's Bob! Good to see you here! I just re-read the original post and thought he said "SD45's" not "SD45-2's". WOOPS! But yes, I realise the first batch of SD45-2's were in "Dress Blues". I think the SD45-2-B's wore that scheme up to today didn't they? [IMG]

Thanks guys for the help. I model the BN in the late 70's, and have always liked the SD45-2's and wanted to model one, but BN didn't have any. I also prefer the dress blue to warbonnet, so I thought just maybe that the SD45-2's wore the blue paint. It sounds like they were just too new.

Not necessarily too late. The SD45-2's were delivered, as memory serves me, in the 1972-1974 period. That means the first batch, in the old blue and yellow, were delivered in 1972. Even though they started repainting them into the warbonnet colors in the 1970's, that doesn't mean everyone of the fist order was repainted during the 1970 period. I have pictures of various old blue and yellow diesels in the early 1980's still in old blue. They usually repainted while shopped or rebuilt, and that didn't happen all at the same time. If you really want to model one, I would stretch the point since you are modeling late 1970's.

HI Brent, good to be here, looks like a good board.

I saw one of those SD45-2Bs not that long ago- anyone know the current scoop on which are still running and which aren't?
