Geez... seems like a lopsided trade... CSX must have something else up their sleeve to swap like that!

Dave, Conrail ordered 30 SD80MACs, which mostly saw service on the Boston-Albany line until the split. Now, they are in coal service with the CSX and working for the NS as well, though I don't know in what capacity.

These are 5000HP AC locomotives, very similar to the SD90MAC. Therefore, they are EMD locos (the 80 and 90 series have the extended fans in the rear).

I loved the 80macs and still do. They were a regular fixture on the Conrail Boston line. They had the classiest paint scheme of any Conrail engine. I even had the chance to get a cab tour when Chester Massachusetts had their "Chester on Track" days.

The 80macs have the 20cylinder 710 prime mover rated at 5000 hp. On the Boston line they handled mainly the manifest freights and autorack trains. Very rarely you would see one on a stack train. I had the privilege to experience them for almost 3 yrs before CSX took over and took them away :( Being trackside when a pair of these beasts were getting a heavy manifest out of Framingham was something I will never forget. I can still see them coming at me at about 15mph then hearing them notch up as the last car cleared the yard limits. All I can saw is "wow". It sure beats the sound of a GE notching up.

As for repaints the 801 was the first because it was involved in a little accident. I don't know if any others were repainted yet.

I sure wish they would send them back to the Boston Line so we can be rid of the AC6000 "bricks" as we call them up here.

I have still not seen an SD80MAC in person, but then again, I have not been out to any of the main lines/yards lately. Any more updates on repainting them to CSX?
