Hi Guys, I'm 69 in less than a weeks time and have decided N guage is going tp be my retirement hobby along with model motorcycles / aircraft making and motorcycling. I haven't had trains since my youth but find myself being dragged in to them when i think about the looming retirement days ahead. I have bought a couple of KATO packs, M2 and V3 as a starting point and will ask Santa for more track / turnouts for Christmas. looking to do a smallish L-shaped shelf layout . Black or White River Junction is currently spinning my wheels. Plenty of reading to do before doing anything too permanent.

Welcome aboard, ihmsakiwi. Your statement about modeling got my attention. I spent 33 years working in flight test at Lockheed Aircraft on such great machines as the F-104, SR-71, U-2, F-117 and L-1011.
Agh, the SR71. My older brothers favorite plane. I have simpler tastes and the F4U Corsair is my favourite. Our father was RNZAF up till hre died so we grew up around planes albeit nothing to cutting edge. We hope to do the Reno races before we croak.
I'll try to keep the questions to a minimum and try to search before asking. I know the "newbie" mentality can drive some senior members to drink as a simple search can usually turn up answers. A bit like when someone asks " what oil is best in my bike". This causes blood pressures to rise on the BMW motorcycle forum i frequent.

I hope you can get to the Reno air races, I used to go every year until I got old. Have hundreds of photos. It's a great show.

Not really. I picked up a small used Tomix shunter just to use to check the rails but nothing as yet. That will be on the cards after I get track laid and scenery mainly done.
DC or DCC............... That is a question I am mulling over. Probably DCC cause I just know if I wire for DC i'll probably regret not doing DCC.
Since you are brand new to the hobby? You are right. DCC, although more expensive is awesome. And since you are actually planning a small layout and not just putting it up for the holidays only! Of course it's always the person's choice as they know their budget and what they want. Best of luck to you. Keep us informed!
