Ok I am thinking about adding a couple small shelves to the fascia so operators have a place to play with the paperwork without setting it on the layout itself. Current and are to have it hanging from a lanyard around the neck but I am trying to think ahead to possible issues. What I am thinking about is a holding shelf. I want to use 1/8" meson it'd attached to hinges so that it will fold down or up out of the way. My question is what to use to hold it up for when it is in use? Any ideas? Thanks! Any shelf will end up with down force applied. BTDT. My benchwork is 1X4, so I made 1/2" ply shelves (paperwork, coffee cups, etc) that fit under, screwed straight up, and bridging back to the next 1X4 for strength. Those do not fail. Having some Rube Goldberg device to hold them up isn't probably the ideal, but you can swing the shelf. One pivot pin, with a big washer under, one on top as a "distance piece" or shim, swing it about the pivot to extend, swing back out of the way. If you really want to use 1/8" Masonite, well, fold it up, hinged, with the tail long enough to hit a cross brace behind the fascia. Bury a cupboard magnet in the top of the fascia with a metal piece maybe under the shelf to hold it up. Walking about with a lanyard around one's neck is asking for something to get caught and dragged off the layout. Opinion. Dave
Thanks. Right now I am playing with different ideas. I used electric gang boxes for car card boxes at every industry. I was thinking the lanyards and bi set clips to hold the cards for the train to keep them out of the way so both hands could be used as necessary to operate the train. Folding shelf? Easy. Hinges that would let the shelf swing up and either a latch or magnets to hold it in place till you don't need it. If you're just sorting cards, the magnets will hold the shelf till you don't need it. Or a slot and a slide out shelf. Art
The trick is having something strong enough to write on, yet can be folded or slid out of the way. If the purpose is just sorting cards and/or paperwork, then I think small boxes attached to the fascia would be enough.
