When I was a kid, my dad owned a machine shop. Many times over the years I had to wait in the office for hours, drinking cokes, eating old donuts, and reading trade magazines. There were always adds for the latest numerical controlled mills, carbide tooling, etc. I read them all, made time go by. While reminiscing this morning with my dad (81) about what I did to pass the time waiting for him to finish so we could go home, I thought to myself, what kind of adds would be in the trade journals at a station stop along the area I am modeling (Stampede Pass). If I was stuck as a telegrapher at Stampede or Martin, what would I be reading in the trade magazines? I did some googling and found some interesting adds to share. Please share any adds you have stumbled across too, could be interesting.
Griswold of Minneapolis, MN was also the manufacturer of the novel Rotating Banner Signal as seen here. The stop sign pivots to be seen by motorists only when the flashers are operating. [ Photo not mine, see rrx.chadkluck.net ]
This is my very favorite of all crossing warning devices. Wish I had one and a place to set it up. I remember them in a few places on the MILW, such as Tacoma. Back when some still even still had their yellow Stop sign not yet replaced.
Wow. This brings up memories. I had forgotten about such ads. They were common when I was a youth, as were radio and TV commercials for the famous passenger trains.
