Yeah Jerry, it was a heart stopper to see that sitting their! in WM paint, lettering half their, an not got a MOW emblem on it anywhere! Specially in 2003! I'm still in amazement on seeing it. That was taken this past Sunday, around 2 PM EST.

    John,
That's a neat find! I saw a C&O painted covered sand hopper last week that still had C&O reporting marks too!

Whenever I am near railroading, a passing train, or a facility, I always find myself looking. For surviving rolling stock of the "glory" days. Even if rusty, I get a thrill from seeing it once more.

    John-

Actually, many of the companies still exist. The corporate "shell" if you will. Note the car to the right: "NYC." You will actually still find PRR, CGW, and many others out there. Not that they haven't been repainted, but their owners still do exist.

Many mergers are just the operations side. Many people, even UP fans, believe that the OSL , O-WR&N, etc, were merged into the UP back in the mid-1930's. Nope. Just the operations. The actual corporations still existed! Were still the legal owners of the lands, tracks and structures! They existed clear into the 1970's and 1980's. Before finally being totally merged into the UP.

There are reasons for this. Probably most often, there is some sort of accounting (tax) advantage involved.

One good resource for tracing these behind the scenes maneuvers, is going to the local library. Find the Moody's Transportation Manual. They contain all kinds of interesting data!

    Ken,
This I know! Thing is, the B&O had totally mergered the whole WN line into itself in 1972! Then B&O an C&O had made it final to create Chessie System. As far as today the B&O and C&O still do exist, they hold shares of stock under the CSX corperation. They are the 2 biggest share holders for CSX an hauling coal for CSX in the present time. However CSX has closed out all the old traditions of carrying on the "B&O" or "C&O" emblems....

As for the WM tho, it was 100% absorbed by the B&O by 1972 an they took the emblems an all... then the B&O was taken in under C&O as Chessie System, then they began the traditional emblem markings, which B&O didn't carry for the WM till the years of the Chessie cat.....Then Chessie began the emblem things an it carried on till 1987 I beleive durring the Seaboard System merger an Chessie System merger an then they decided to do away with it an stick to straight CSX....

Its odd seeing a 1966-67 WM gondola not repainted an still in full revenue! None-the-less...

Heres some more pictures, to add to last Sundalys railfanning trip to this Sundays railfanning tricp... Here's a few I didn't get to post from last weekend! ENJOY!

This is a rare of breed caboose for the Western Maryland Railway. As they were prone to the "Northeastern" all steel "Center Cupola" cabeese.... Altho, the WM had a few of these if, I'm not mistaken the WM had 8 maybe 10 of these which were the last numbers for their caboose line. The numbers for these "Wide Vission" cabeese for the Western Maryland was #1900 series, which would have been consecutive, so, if they had 8 of them, it would have been 1900 to 1908, or if they had 10 it would have been 1900 to 1910. Not to many pictures exist of these cabeese for the WM, nor is to much information avalable as well.

And the next picture, it was a MOW car, in Chessie paint....

As I said, this was in Chessie's MOW fleet, but anything possible! Heres an other shot of it showing the "B&O" markings, an the number... which is slashed out (which leads me to think it was in the Chessie MOW fleet...
