OK, my camera is considered to be old and outdated. It is a Fuji S5100 of 4MP. And I am pretty happy with it. But lately it has come up with a new trick- I turn it on and it shuts itself off before I am ready for such an action! I have not done any fiddling with settings and have tried several sets of batteries. Then on and off does deplete batteries faster than normal, howewver as already noted the trouble is not batteries.

So, any suggestions as to the ailment being suffered? Please don't tell me I need to buy a new camera, as if I could, I would. I must continue to use this one for who knows how much longer, or until I get a box via USPS filled with twenty dollar bills.....

    ???

Ken, are you sure it isn't batteries? I have a camera I bought from an (shall be unnamed) computer company. It's terrible. If I put brand new AA batteries in it, it won't even turn on. I have some rechargeables, 2500MA, that will allow me to shoot about a dozen pix before it quits. :tb-sad:

    Jim-

The camera was acquired in 2004. Until less than two weeks ago, it never did this. Today, up on Marias, it was shutting off on me continually. Normally I see a low battery warning in the viewer, there has been none. Normally the low battery warning lasts a very brief period, then my camera simply will not turn on.

I have tried new batteries several times, using a couple of different brands of AA cells.

    :(

Take a look at cleaning both the "+" and "-" connections within the camera as it might be that they are dirty and thus not allowing the current from the batteries to flow cleanly. Also check there condition as far as alignment and spring towards the batteries to make sure they are also making good contact with the batteries...

I would try verifying the camera did not get set to auto-shut off. Most cameras have such a feature that shuts itself off after a period of inactivity. You said you didn't change any settings, but even then, a setting could still have gotten glitched out of wack.

    Other than that... :/

Did some Google Searching and found someone had a loss door on their memory card and that also caused it to shutoff. Maybe take out your memory card and reset it and make sure all is as it should be that way too...

I grabbed well over 100 photos today. Never had to touch the memory card. When I took it out this evening to download, it was locked tight for me to open. My camera won't power on at all if that card is not seated and door snapped closed.

I took those batteries out earlier today, burnished the ends and contacts. I try to never touch those as the oils on fingers.... I tested that set of batteries when we got home, this particular type is the blue Duracell "Pix" model, and all four tested as good as brand new.

I'll see if there is an auto-shut off which is adjustable. There is one which shuts it down after five minutes. But what it was doing is shutting off after five seconds, or as soon as I turned the camera on, or after approximately thirty seconds. All very random. And untimely, of course, as it caused me to miss a couple of photos. :tb-mad:

When it works right, for an old 4MP camera, it does well. See attached of a westward piggy-stacker climbing up through Bison, MT this afternoon.

Nothing wrong with that shot, Ken, it's very nice. Does that mean that the camera has started working again? Must be, if you got 100 shots. :tb-biggrin:

    Jim-

Unfotunately, no. Before we started chasing that train, it had shut itself off a bunch of times. The camera had shut itself off right before that train appeared. And did so again I can't count how many times, the rest of yesterday afternoon.

I've checked the setup and don't find anything. As I've had batteries out, everything should have defaulted when they were re-inserted. And that appears to be true from what I can see displayed.

Of course today I am at home and not using the camera. While sitting on the dining table, collecting dust, it's working fine. Ha ha ha.

Here is the same train, many miles west and a whole bunch of spurious camera shutoffs later. Rolling through Essex, Mt.

I probably should not have left the house, the way my health has been. But my wife got up and wanted to get me out. It felt good, until late afternoon when things started sliding downhill. Today I am paying for it all. Big time problems... Oh well. I was free for a few minutes.

Well, that one is a beauty. Why don't you post it on the main board under Railfan Photos? If Buddy is on the ball he will pick it for one of the best of the week. I sure would.

Me? Rated in a photo contest as having something good? Hmmm. Well, I can put it there. Let me see if an employee friend with a certain RR can get me the actual train ID first, for use in a caption.
