As a kid our family lived in Bethel Park and would frequently travel to our relatives in Baltimore. Normally riding on B&O trains #8 the Shenandoah Eastbound and #9 the Washington-Chicago Express. Both operated along the River and the mills during the dark early evening hours - the light show that the mills put on puts any of today's laser light productions to shame. Not only that, in many cases you could feel the heat that was what was generating the light with hot metal - through the passenger car windows. WOW, just WOW.

Also there was a Slag Pile adjacent to PA Route 51 - there was a Pizza place across the road from the Slag Pile, you could sit in the dining room of the Pizza place and watch the Slag Trains operate on the top edge of the pile, dumping the contents of the slag cars over the edge and watch the yellow hot slag cascade down the pile, cooling and turning red and then gray as it lost its heat.

This was all in the 1952-55 point in time.
