About a week ago, the crews were working after dark every night laying new track on the double main at the end of my backyard.
This is a relatively high(er) speed mainline on the CN Toronto to Windsor Corridor.
They redid both the North and South track and I thought I'd post a fine example of their work.
Perhaps they should work during the day instead.

Anyone have any other examples to share ?

(Note to self) Do not invite this crew to help lay track on next layout !

:eek:mg: I'd certainly hope they'll come back through, and change out ties. If not, and anything goes wrong, you've certainly captured some valuable evidence...

Yup! Pretty much looks like they forgot something!
Why would they bother to drive spikes into air?

Because those spikes will last longer than the others actually driven into wood. They aren't bent. Don't get throat cut...

The track work itself looks a little shaky.....BUT they did a great job on the weathering.....

Good evidence, now put it safe somewhere where the inevitable hazmat spill won't melt it.

Although you only need 1 in 4 ties to be secured to hold the track in gauge that quality of work would be considered reckless behaviour here.

That would be so dangerous to model, if your train derailed there it could bring the whole layout down :p

Notice that the right-hand spike in the top photo was put in sideways, rotated to the left. Its head won't even touch the rail.

Hmm, That kinda track workmanship by CN might explain this?

Reminds me of an Aussie joke,
Old pensioner Bob is sitting out the front enjoying the sun & a cold tinny, when a local council crew come working up the foot path.
Watching these three guys work he notices something very odd.One chap digs a hole, the second bloke re-fills the hole & old matey number three is pouring some water on the filled in hole........
Well this got the better of ole Bob & he ambles down to the crew,
"Oi fellas, whats going on 'ere? Why you digging & re-filling the bloody holes & why you watering it for mate?"
"Oh,errm" council man number one replies "ole Trev, had a sickie today,he usually puts the plants in after I dig the hole"............

Hope the crews come back through to replace the ties........here's hoping!

If they are having to take the main out of service at night to replace rail - it probably isn't that unusual to do the tie replacement program as a production job later. The tie gang can work in windows that the rail gang can't. Technically you don't 'have' to have that many good ties to hold gauge and track class, it just seems very odd to see new spikes driven into sawdust. You can't really re-use the spikes at all.

If you put down new ties under the old rail, then put in the new rail, you'd spike-kill all the ties by driving them twice. If you do it this way and come back through later you've ruined the spikes - maybe - on selected ties.

The roadbed in those isolated shots looks like it could use a good raise as well, lots of debris and fines in there.

I'd bet you'll see a raise/surface & tie program on this relatively soon, or at least I'd hope so. It probably makes more sense than would appear on the surface, but I'll grant you that's an interesting series of shots!
