I have always wondered the what and why on the choice of a model railroad for the hobbyist. So here’s a chance to let it out.

    Scale:
Style of layout: Roundy Round, Point to Point, 100% switching.

    HO
Round/round with Point to Point. In other words I can run Point to Point or Round/Round depending upon the jobs to be done.
Space. When I started I had a 4x7 layout and then added a small yard off of the layout. Then I added a much bigger yard and continued adding trackage as the layout got larger. Now has two yards, and a grain elevator with a drop down section that can be raised when working on the elevator. It's now 7x12x15.
    DCC
    No Sound.

HO, 100% industrial switching with a staging at one end. Was going to do a N Scale p2p, but have change direction. Frame work being done now as well as back drop.

    Scale: N
Style of layout: Point to Point, with sneak-through provision for Roundy Round test running, etc.
Brief reason of choice: prototype is an island seaport at the end of the line, with NO through traffic.
    DCC or DC: DC
Sound or No sound: some under-the-table sound

    HO Scale.
Continuous running. As a lone wolf operator, I like to run trains unattended while I do switching in the yards. I like railfanning, too.
DCC, with sound on most engines.
Freight above, subways and trolleys below ground.
The Milwaukee Road, Late Transition Era, with dual-era to the 1930s.
    Highly-detailed scenery everywhere, primarily urban.
    One mermaid, no dinosaurs.

    Scale: N scale
Style of layout: Point to Point with alot of switching switching. There is also a loop so my 6yr old son can enjoy running his NCL passenger train.
Brief reason of choice: Lumber and timber primarily, a grain elevator, a cement plant, and an export dock.
DCC or DC: DC (only because it is easier for my son to use)
Sound or No sound: no sound

N-Scale diorama focused on rural New England and Mississippi countrysides through which two B&M(-ish) branchlines provide transportation. I guess it's an artistic expression of my life's limited experience and environment, not focused on lots of track. Probably just a "getting old" thing....:uhoh:

    HO Scale
    Point-to-Point/Switching
I dabbled in N Scale and found I preferred HO due to size and availability of parts
Neither at the moment, plan to invest in NCE system this year
No Sound..... I can spend my money better elsewhere like building the layout and paying bills.

    Scale: HO
Style of layout: Point-to-point switching layout, with common staging yard set up for roundy-round operation if desired. In use, just point-to-point.
Brief reason of choice: Space considerations, plus my 55-year-old eyes and back aren't gettting any younger. Plus, I like modeling the Frisco.
DCC or DC: DC for now, but plan on getting DCC
Sound or No sound: No sound, but I do have one locomotive with sound decoder, and that opposed-piston prime mover sound is nice!

Style of layout: A little from column A, a bit from column B, and a smidgeon of column C
Brief reason of choice: It's my railroad
    DCC or DC: DC
Sound or No sound: No sound. Just the sound of the electric motors - a bit of nostalgia here.

    HO

Mining/logging layout. 1931. Heavy on scenery to track ratio. Point to point now, but will have roundy round this summer. Shay, Heisler, Climax locos. This time frame and space available make happy to run this type of HO layout. DCC w/Sound Jim

20th Century Steam to late steam. Alton Railroad and Alton Limited + UP steam. Years ago, I mentioned to my wife that there were some Alton RR and Alton Limited stuff out there in HO and that I would like to get some one day just to run around the Christmas tree during the holidays. She found a set of Alton Limited passenger cars in HO and got them for me. That made me find a compatible 4-6-2 steamer and HO track so I could run it. Been adding to my rolling stock collection every since and included UP late steam along the way.

No permanent layout yet but when I do put down a track, it's roundy-round with 2 mail lines and a small yard. KATO Unitrack works great for temporary layouts! All DCC and sound now. Rapido lights in the passenger cars and it's pretty cool to watch the Alton Limited circle the track with the lights off at night!

    Scale: HO
Style of layout: Will be Bi-level shelf, point to point. The garage/layout building will be built this fall. The plan is to use the 7 flat panel doors (cut up sections) from the house remodel for major town areas, supported on shelving brackets. Doors covered with 2 inches of foam for the base.
Brief reason of choice: Space is limited and I wanted some flat land running and decent switching. Protolancing Frisco's Highline from KC to Springfield, Mo.
DCC or DC: Will be DCC; slowly buying DCC engines. Will have a huge sale on 100+ DC engines and a ton of narrow guage cars and engines in a year or two
Sound or No sound: Sound. Love the sound.

DCC or DC : NCE DCC
    Sound?: Not yet

Scale: currently N Scale / HO Scale locomotives and rolling stock in storage [my eyesight and figer dexterity might mean a move back to HO in future] the small limitations make N Scale my choice for longer trains/would have to sacrifice that or find a house with a larger basement

Style of layout: Roundy Round, Point to Point, 100% switching: Point to point with staging that provides both continuous round/round and reversing loops
Brief reason of choice: (1) I like to run trains in continuous loop (2) now and again wanting some realistic RR operation where staging becomes an operational yard

DCC or DC: DC rather spend the $ on building and maintaining model rr

Sound or No sound: might purchase the MRC sound system it is is realistic enough in quality of sound

    Scale: N
Style: Out and back with return loop, and an emphasis on switching
Reason: Flat running and switching. Wanted somewhere mid west area to match the aim: it's gonna be okay (so Gonnabe, Oklahoma)
    Power: DC
    No sound

Lots of oval roundy roundy in Ho scale with real plants and sunlight. Anything that can run on c100 gets run with absolutely no regard for prototype era or scale fidelity. :p
