Because people talking about the (over)size of the new MTL GP9 compared to the AZL GP7, I've made some pictures to show you the difference. Sorry for the quality of the pictures.

Thanks for posting the pictures Jurg. This is just what people need to see so they can decide for themselves weather or not the width is an issue.

Nice, how about a similar comparison between MTL's GP-9 and GP-35.

If they match up they will be a good eye candy for running together wont they?

This looks like a good match doesn't it?
Since I have a GP-35 I guess I will go for a GP-9 to run together with it next time I have some cash to spare for a new locomotive.

Jürg: on the gp9 is it some kind of fibre optics on the headlights? it look's like it, that would be a great improvement from the gp35.

    I wish i bought a good running gp9 instead of a gp7...

Henrik I diden't opened the GP9 yet but I agree that the lights are very much better then on the GP35. The Geep also runs very smooth. What's wrong with your GP7?

Heheh, there is many faults with it. For the first i have destroyed the pc board because the dcc instructions is wrong and there is no space for a decoder in it. The truck's is just acting weird, but Hans has said that they might make a replacement truck. And i just thinks the whole engine look's weird, but that might be because it is UP :p But when i fix it i guess i end up using it as a helper on my SP line :)

the MTL GP9s have a new light package in them. they are not fiber optics but plastic lenses in a housing so that the LEDs don't lit up the inside of the shell, but shine out the plastic lense inserts. Thank you, MTL for making these really nice lenses!

I'll be glad when all this worry about comparisons is over. it's like buying cars: you like one brand or another. i wonder what the difference is between a lowest price lexus/infinity and a highest priced honda/toyota?

I think I like the looks of the AZL better, as there seems to be a more complete detailed look to it. The rivets on the roof panels, and the pilots and handrails look better detailed.

But... I like the Northern Pacific better than the Union Pacific, and since I have some GP7's to compare with, I can start detailing them.

On the Plus side of the GP9, we have a drop in DCC decoder, so no soldering is required be running DCC.

With the BLMA detailing products, and one of my snowplow pilot mods, we can pretty up the MTL quite nicely! If I did not have to work overtime today, I would be working on the pilot/plow mods and DCC upgrades right now!

I don't really need to do anything to the AZL GP's to make them look better, but I might put some cab sunshades, and cut levers on. I have to DCC them though, and that requires a bit of grinding.

You'r right David, we must enjoy every addition to our Hobby and I'm sure I'll buy a lot of GP9's when they come in the right Paintscheme but with one thing I disagree a little bit. The AZL GP7 is 210$ and the MTL GP9 is 195$ (both retail prices) so nobody can say the AZL Engine is overpriced. The AZL Engine also has traction tyres, better details and a more accurate look, just to be fair if we compare them.

Jurg, the GP9 can be had for $150, while the GP7 lowest street price is $195. For $45, I can buy a lot of detail parts. While I do agree that the GP7 does look better, and its better detail. In the hands of David F., the GP9 can look as good and more detail then the GP7. I find adding details can be a lot of fun.

For me, I was going to buy one of this engines anyway. Being a modern guy, I wasnt going to buy a whole fleet of them. I chosed the GP9 because it has a smooth running mechanism and drop in decoder. Even though I chosed the GP9, I think the GP7 is a good alternative also, specially when AZL comes out with a drop in decoder. I do hate to solder.

I have MUed the GP35, and AZL GP7 together fine. They run close enough speeds to MU ok.

John the problem is that there are not many David F's out there who share their work with others. :)

Has anyone stripped a AZL GP7 yet? Is it the same paint as their brass models?

    Thanks

I think it is an Engineering Cyano-Epoxy Paint Formulation that is designed to trigger a shell meltdown in case of unauthorized stripping attempts, but why don't you go ahead and see what really happens?:shade:

Well, all joking aside, and I remember Tim saying he hated stripping down AZL locos, I need to know the absolute best way to strip a AZL shell.

I'm soon to have two of the plastic ones to do for Karin and I need to know.....help
