Things learned the hard way

I got a chance to work on my layout a little tis weekend. One thing that I wanted to get done was to pour my lake. I had the base sealed (or so I thought) and painted. I used Woodland Scenins EZ Water and began to pour my lake.

Once the first layer was poured, I went into town for a few things. Since the instructions on the EZ water says to let the first layer cure 24 hours, I didn't bother to check the layout until the next morning. When I did - I realized the lake had not been sealed completely. I had a few spots where the epoxy dripped onto the carpet. :(

Anybody have any ides how to get this out. I think I'm just going to have cut out the carpet and replace those spots. This is definately one that will be filed away. Has anybody else learned things the hard way like this? Maybe other can learn from your mistakes.

Oh, you mean like the time I knocked over the soldering iron while helping a friend wire his layout and put a big burn in the carpet? Or how about the time I was trying to re-suspend paint pigment using a shaker I made from an old orbital sander? I bolted a block of wood to it with a hole cut about the diameter of a Floquil paint bottle. I would hold the bottle down in the hole with one hand and the sander in the other so it would shake things up real well. To help the agitation process I stuck a few small ball bearings into the bottle. Well, the bottle broke and paint went everywhere. All over me, my work bench, the walls, ceiling, you get the picture.

Psssst Eric...Drop cloths under projects/work benches where you don't care about burn marks or goopy messes.

We've all been there though. My worse was the time I built a small layout and had everything just perfect track wise. Mr. smart guy decided to weather his track with spray paint before ballasting but didn't mask the points on his switches. OOPS! None of my switches ever worked well again. Eventually I left that layout by the dumpster even though I had sceniced it entirely and it was "almost finished"

    Eric-

You are certainly not alone! This is one of the largest fraternities in model railroading. Perhaps it should be known as Phi Beta Oops? I've been through the soldering iron burning of a dining table, flooring, and fingers. Paint stains, and many other errors, etc., etc.

Or the time when I left my soldering iron on the concrete floor to cool - you know, to be safe, out of the way of anything that it could ignite.

Then 30 seconds later I stepped on it in bare feet, right in between my smallest 2 toes. . . .

Ouch! That's almost as good as when I sprayed some rolling stock and left them on the floor (due to a lack of working space) only to later step on them! Live and learn.......

I don't need to take a spelling class; only a typing class. My fingers don't know how to spell.

Yes, she did well and all is well.

Thanks to you for the railcar. Very nice of you and she says THANKS.

I've got my hollow core wood door layout temporarily set up on table that is a real piece of the house furniture. I was drilling holes for feeder wires and misjudged how far I had slid the door clear of the table. [IMG] Fortunately DW hasn't seen it yet because the layout is still covering the hole. I'm off to the hardware store tomorrow for some plastic wood!

I once spilled paint on my layout carpet. To make matters worse, I scrubbed so furiously, to get it out before the wife saw it that I tore a tendon in one of my fingers, necessitating a splint, and coincidentally, costing me a chance to play golf with Jack Nicklaus. I didn't bother to explain exactly how that accident happened to him.....

One evening I had an open bottle of Dr. Pepper on the layout bench and a bottle of track cleaner near it. Track cleaner doesn't taste to bad.

Hey, we'll let you off. It must be hard to type with three fingers glued together! [IMG] [IMG]

Some of these stories are sounding really familiar! [IMG]

Oh, you mean things like: "don't try to mill anything by holding it in one hand and the power tool with the other?"

I tried to enlarge a hole in the panel and had nothing to clamp it down. So I held it with my left hand, took the powertool and .... cut into my left middle finger. Men, fingers _can_ bleed ... a lot.
I have the markings still visible.. [IMG]

Oh yeah, been there too. I was drilling holes in a metal panel to mount terminal strips to. The drill broke through. The good news was when the bit hit my arm on the other side, it did not puncture my skin because I was wearing a long sleeve shirt. The bad new was it took the shirt material and wound it up with some skin caught in the middle. The other good news was the drill had a reverse switch so I could unwind it quickly. Looked kind of like a tie die rope burn.

I recently learned that my small dog thinks rolling stock left at ground level it tasty. She chewed up one of my MT boxcars and some parts to a building kit. Now everything is out of her reach.

I'm glad to see that others have made similar mistakes makes me feel better [IMG]

Most of us have a story like these we just don't admit until someone else does.
