Wonder what could have caused that, on an (apparently) straight track! Scary if you happened to be on the highway at the time

    Mopac Or JD,
Can you tell us what happens to the material spilled, whether it be coal ,grain, pellet plastic or what ever?Coal for instance,do they just re-use it?Grain would have to be dumped?as well as plastic from contamination?or are there insurance legalities lurking there?
Just got me wondering as there would be hundreds of tons of material on the ground & no one see's where it goes!

Usually the railroad has to buy the load, and then do whatever they can with it. I have seen when a plastic load is derailed and contaminated, after the railroad paid for it, find a buyer that can use contaminated material, and sell it to them to help recover some of the cost.

    OC,

I have also have seen out west where the railroad will dig a big hole and bury the derailed cars. Two different times that I remember were in the mid 1980's when a solid reffer train went on the ground between Truckee, CA and Reno, NV the SP dug a big hold and pushed the 9 loaded cars of produce into it and covered it up, man what a smell later that summer.

And a Santa Fe train went into the water on the delta west of Stockton, Ca because of a washout. The 4 locos and the first five cars and there TOFC loads were covered over and used to shore up the new roadbed.

as far as damaged commodity from derailments or such like jd said the rr or it's insurance will pay for it and then it will be disposed of however they can get rid of it, i am sure there are places that will take coal like this, there is no real damge just dirty with the debris from the road and such, this will burn off with combustion. autos well that is entirely different, once the autorack is derailed, and sustains any damage, the load of autos inside is technically supposed to be junked or given a junk title.

A little bit surprising these days, with environmental concerns.

I remember about twenty years ago. BN up here buried some old ties. It was a large quantity. And somehow they caught fire. Oh boy did they have troubles!

That would be a very large hole and a waste.
