I know that the Southern often tacked TOFC cars on the rear of passenger trains in later years. I'm finding much evidence ofthis practice on the Washington-Atlanta line but I'm striking out on the Bristol-Chattanooga line. Does anyone know if they employeed this practice on the central and western portions of the railroad or if it was resrved for the eastern line? Thanks

I researched this with my limited resources and in spite of a lot of photos I couldn't find any evidence either. However, when did Southern discontinue its' Tennessee passenger services? As far as i can tell adding pigs to the rear of passenger trains didn't really start until the '70's. Before that as far as I can tell train #23, The COMAR special was the pig train in Tennessee.

Hey Dave, thanks for the reply. The Southern's last passenger train on the Knoxville Division was August 11th, 1970 according to my reference material. The earliest evidence of the "mixed" trains that I can find is January 1971, again on the Washington-Atlanta line.Could be close enough for modelling purposes, I suppose.I really like the mixed train concept but not knowing if they ran on the Knoxville Division really bugs me.

I had completely forgotten about the COMAR. Do you know how long it lasted and the routing?

I have a photo dated May 1963 with COMAR being hauled by three F-3s through Greensboro N.C. Unfortunately I do not know the routing.
